Budget, staffing, bus barn and more on school board agenda

The Greene County Schools board of education has a full agenda for its regular meeting March 16. The meeting begins at 6:30 pm at the administrative building, 204 W. Madison St, in Jefferson.

The board will receive detailed information about the bus barn from the Greene County Fair Association. The board last month directed superintendent Tim Christensen and transportation director Wayne Hougham to begin looking into building a school-owned facility rather than renting space at the fairgrounds, which has been done for many years. The board also earmarked about $63,000 from Grow Greene County for a new facility.

The board will review agreements to share the services of curriculum director Karen Sandberg with Southeast Webster-Grand and the services of media specialist Jenny Fisher with the Ogden district. Christensen will also make recommendations for staff reductions/terminations for 2016-17.

Christensen will present the proposed budget for 2016-17. The budget calls for a combined levy rate of $12.36594 (per thousand dollars of taxable valuation). That is a decrease from $12.51514 in the current year. The rate in the former Jefferson-Scranton district is pegged at $12.40795; the rate in the former East Greene district would be set at $12.27958.

Total taxes on property in the proposed budget is estimated at $5.7 million with state foundation aid at $8.2 million. Total funding is estimated at $19.1 million.

Total expenditures are estimated at $18 million, a decrease of $940,000 from estimated 2015-16 expenses.

On another financial matter, the board will receive information about potential savings in refinancing 2007 sales tax revenue bonds.

Also on the agenda is a revision of the graduation policy that will add classes to the list of those allowed as meeting science requirements for graduation; consideration of using PPEL funds to replace Chromebooks; summer projects for completion with sales tax/PPEL fund; a presentation of Iowa Assessment scores; and more. The board will go into closed session at the end of the meeting to evaluate the superintendent.

The complete agenda is posted at GCNO under the Calendar/Agenda tab.
