More than 6 million young people from across the country will celebrate National 4-H Week during October. Greene County 4-H leverages National 4-H Week to showcase the great things the 4-H youth development program offers and highlight the 4-H young people working each day to make a positive impact on their community.

Wednesday was the day for 880 Healthiest State Walks all across Iowa. The annual Healthiest State Walk supports the Healthiest State Initiative, an effort to make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation. The Greene County chapter of National Honor Society (NHS) is having a tailgate fundraiser during the last home football game on Friday, Oct. 16, from 5 to 7:30 pm. The supper will be served by the crow’s nest at the football field, located under the press box.

A luncheon slated for next Sunday at First United Methodist Church in Jefferson features grilled chicken hindquarters and Mexican rice, with potato salad, desserts and beverages rounding out the menu. Trinity Lutheran Church will host a Fall Festival next Sunday, Oct. 18, from 4 to 6 pm at the church, 801 W. Lincoln Way, in Jefferson. The fun will include pumpkin painting, face painting, a hay ride, games, craft and story time. A snack will be served. There is no charge. All are welcome.  

The week ending Oct. 9 was dry in Jefferson. The last time Jefferson went seven days without precipitation was March. There was no precipitation March 5-24, and there was a total of just .14 inches of precipitin the entire month.
