Tree Tracings

Tree Tracings~by Valerie Ogren, Greene County Genealogical Society

Meeting notice: The next meeting of the Greene County Genealogical Society will be Saturday, Aug. 1, at 10 am in the basement meeting room of the Jefferson public library. Jim Copeland will share with us some history of his family which was researched by his grandfather. The library is handicapped accessible and guests are always welcome. The reference library will be open at 9 am if you would like to do some research before the meeting.

July recap: Attendance at our “Christmas in July” was overwhelming. I wonder if 17 people are trying to tell us they would rather just eat out, visit and have fun rather than have a program?  Thanks to all who brought items or cash donations for the food pantry. They were much appreciated. The need is great all year – not just at Christmas.

There were about 60 genealogy entries in the Open Class division at the County Fair – more than past years. When Theresa Liewer was finished judging, that area was a sea of blue and purple ribbons. It was gratifying to have so many entries from younger family members. Thanks again to Arlene Johnson for getting the project started, and to Elaine Deluhery and Joan Nugent for registering all the entries.

Helpful hints from IGS: Did you ever find a document online and then not be able to find it later? Dick Eastman’s blog has an explanation on how to save yourself a lot of grief. http://blog.eogn.com/2015/07/02/why-was-the-information-removed-from-online/ Chicago Tribune Archives are free—for the time being.  If you don’t have family connections to the Chicago area, it’s an easy way to look back in our nation’s history.  The link is at http://archives.chicagotribune.com/

Reference library: If you have an interest in family history but need help getting started, we have volunteers in our reference room every Wednesday from 1 to 4 pm and Saturdays from 9 am to noon. We have an online computer and a copy machine available. If your family has compiled a family history, we would welcome a donated copy for our collection.
