Rams win West Marshall tournament with 2-1 record for the day

The Greene County Ram softball team is at 21-5 on the season after a loss and two wins at the South Hamilton tournament Saturday in Jewell. The Rams were tournament champions despite the loss because of the two-pool structure of the six team tournament.

In the first game, the Southeast Valley Jaguars avenged an 11-1 loss at the hands of the Rams in Jefferson earlier this month with a 9-3 victory. Coach Tom Kennedy used sophomore pitcher Hannah Promes to start that game. The Jaguars collected their nine runs, five of them earned, in the first two innings of play. Senior Marissa Promes pitched two innings and freshman Samantha Hardaway made her varsity debut in the last inning.

Emily Christensen hit a triple and a single and drove in a run. Emma Saddoris hit a double and the Promeses hit one single each. Marissa Promes grabbed an RBI with hers.

In the second game in pool play the Rams beat I-35 (Truro) 10-0 behind the pitching of Marissa Promes. Marissa struck out 10 batters and walked none.

The Rams got 11 hits against I-35. Tressa Rasmussen hit a double and a single and drove in a run and Christensen hit a triple and a single. Carleigh Paup hit three singles for five runs batted in. Kaybl Mobley hit two sings, Hannah Onken added a double, and Marissa Promes hit a single.

In the third game, I-35 defeated Southeast Valley, so all three teams had 1-1 records in pool play. The Rams went into the title game based on their run margin.

In the title game, the Rams claimed their third win over the South Hamilton, this one by a score of 5-4.

The game was at a stalemate as the score was tied at 4-4 for the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. With the Rams batting as the home team, they scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Marissa Promes pitched all seven innings. She allowed five hits, struck out eight batters and walked one. Three of the Hawks’ runs were earned.

The Rams again had 11 hits. Mobley hit a double and two singles for one RBI. Marissa Promes hit two singles and got one RBI, and Bailey Godwin got two singles. Christensen hit a triple and got an RBI, and Onken, Rasmussen and Paup each hit a single.

The Rams are now 21-5 overall and 11-0 in the HOIAC. They play six games this coming week, all of them conference games, before starting post-season play July 8 in Jefferson. The Rams are ranked fourth in Class 3A as of June 26.
