Rams split games against Perry

The Greene County teams split non-conference games in Jefferson against Perry, with the girls winning and the boys losing.

The Jayettes threatened in the seventh inning at the city field in Jefferson, but the Rams held onto the lead for a 3-2 win. They extended their winning streak to 11-0.

Ram pitcher Marissa Promes held the Jayettes to only two hits in the first six innings and the Rams led 3-0 going into the seventh inning. The first two batters that inning got on base with Ram fielding errors. A bunt that was fielded by Promes resulted in the first out but advanced runners to second and third. A single scored both runners, putting the score at 3-2 with a runner on base and only one out. Left fielder Kayla Mobley caught a pop fly for the second out. The next batter bunted, and although the throw to first nearly hit the dirt, Hannah Onken was able to make the out to end the game.

Promes struck out five batters and walked none.

The Rams got six hits off Jayette pitcher Emma Olejniczak. She struck out six Rams, all in the first three innings. She walked none.

Onken put the Rams on the scoreboard with a solo home run in the second inning. The Rams didn’t score again until the fifth inning. Tressa Rasmussen started the inning with a single and then stole second on a passed ball. Emma Saddoris hit a double to the fence and then advanced to third on a throwing error to second. Rasmussen scored for a Saddoris RBI. Sydney Koch popped up a foul ball that was caught for the first out. Bailey Godwin put down a bunt. Olejniszak hit the dirt on a gallant attempt to field it, but Saddoris scored and Godwin was safe at first. Godwin stole second but was stranded there, as Carleigh Paup popped up to center field and Kayla Mobley hit a bouncer to the pitcher for the final outs.

Onken hit a single with two outs in the sixth inning. Megan Carey went in as a runner for her and stole second and third, but she was stranded there. The only other Ram hit for the game was a Koch single in the third inning.

The Bluejays won the baseball game at Allensworth Field by a 6-1 score. The game was tight until Perry scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Junior Daric Whipple pitched 6-1/3 innings. He allowed four earned runs on three hits.

The Rams scored in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Riah Nelsen. The Rams had six hits, all of them singles, with one each from Whipple, Colton Fitzpatrick, Alex Rasmussen, Reid Lamoureux, Dylan McConnell and Tyler Beger.

The Rams are now 7-4 overall and 5-2 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference.

The teams return to league action with road games at Saydel.
