JPD officer Nick Sorensen hired as building/zoning official

Jefferson police officer Nick Sorensen will be the new Jefferson building and zoning official after action taken by the city council at its regular meeting June 9.

According to city administrator Mike Palmer, there were 18 applicants for the position. Sorensen will assume the position June 15. Sorensen’s starting annual salary will be $46,547.

Mayor Craig Berry said Sorensen’s primary focus as he begins will be clean up of alley, junk, garbage and old vehicles. Council member Lisa Jaskey interjected that she hopes Sorensen will use the Uniform Maintenance Code adopted by the city council in the spring of 2014. Palmer said the city had worked to “maintain” in the time since Tom Heater left the position in April for a job at Wild Rose Casino, and that with Sorensen’s hire, the city would be able to be more aggressive in enforcement efforts.
