Ram baseball, softball teams send Mustangs home with losses

The Greene County baseball and softball teams are both 2-0 after games in Jefferson May 28 against the PCM Mustangs. The baseball team has not yet been scored on, nor has it played a seven inning game. The boys’ 10-0 victory came via the 10-run rule in six innings. The softball team won a tight 2-0 game against Heart of Iowa rival PCM. Last summer PCM finished first in the HOIAC and the Rams finished second.

Senior Riah Nelsen pitched his first no-hitter at Allensworth Field east of the high school. He pithched all six innings and had 11 strikeouts and two walks.

Nelsen was also successful at bat. He hit a double and two singles for two RBI. He also managed to steal home. Dylan McConnell and Jordan Challen hit sacrifice flies for RBIs, and Colton Fitzpatrick singled and had an RBI. Daric Whipple, Reid Lamoureux, Tyler Beger and Jordan Hostetler also singled. The Rams scored six of their 10 runs in the fifth inning.

The game looked much different at the city softball field on the east side of Jefferson as pitchers battled in a tight game. Ram senior pitcher Marissa Promes was the victor over PCM’s Kayla Jennings. Promes struck out nine batters, gave up no walks, and held the Mustangs to two hits. The Rams made two errors in the game.

The Rams had only one base runner in the first four innings and only five hits for the entire game. Four of the five hits were in the fifth inning, including junior Sydney Koch’s two-out double that allowed seniors Tressa Rasmussen and Emma Saddoris to score.

Both teams travel to Collins Friday night to play the CMB Raiders.
