Veterans plan Armed Forces Day picnic lunch

Armed Forces DayArmed Forces Day is a day to recognize members of the Armed Forces who are currently serving. To mark Armed Forces Day on May 16, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliary, and the American Legion will host an Armed Forces Day picnic Saturday, May 16,, from 11 am to 2 pm at the VFW hall, 109 N. Chestnut St, in Jefferson.

The three veterans groups will serve hot dogs, chili dogs, chips, and drinks. Free will donations will be accepted. Current members of the Armed Forces will be the veterans’ special guests. “This day is to honor you,” a spokesperson said about current servicemen and women, “so please come in and let us serve you in return. Your military service is your donation to us,” a spokesperson said.

Raffle tickets for $5 each will continue to be sold through May 15 for three pork bundles, each estimated to be 20-25 lbs. Tickets are available at Complete Insurance LTD/Farmers Mutual Insurance, Bunkers Dunkers, and The Printer’s Box. Winners will be notified on Armed Forces Day; winners do not need to be present to win.

All proceeds from the meal and the raffle tickets will be divided among the three veteran groups, with most of the funds to benefit the roof maintenance fund, current operating expenses, and future community projects.
