Every year on behalf of the State of Iowa, the SWCD presents the Izaak Walton League Windbreak Award to two deserving windbreak owners. Fouch received the Farmstead (five years old or older) Award for planting a four row windbreak in 1995. Fouch’s windbreak consists of one row of white pine and three rows of blue spruce.
Hedges received the Newly Established (five years or less) Award for a windbreak that was planted in 2009. His windbreak consists of one row each of Black Hills spruce, Norway spruce and common ninebark.
The public is invited to nominate windbreaks for the 2015 award. Please contact Greene SWCD at 515-386-3817. The deadline is in June. ~The Scranton Journal
