Officers enforce snow parking ordinance

Jefferson police officers issued 17 citations for snow parking violations over the weekend.

The ordinance in effect specifies that no vehicles may be parked on any street from 6 pm to 6 am after one-half inch of snow has fallen until the snow has been removed. The ordinance also specifies streets in the downtown area on which the ban is only from 2 am to 6 am.

The ordinance was amended in 2011 making it less restrictive than it had been. The outdated ordinance banned parking on residential streets at all hours, not specifying 6 pm to 6 am. It is the outdated ordinance that is posted on the city website.

The current ordinance, as provided by police chief Dave Morlan is posted here: Ordinance 522, amended.

A snow parking violation carries a $50 fine with $8 court costs. There is no surcharge.

A city snow plow operator reported striking a vehicle parked on S. Grimmell Road at about 5:30 Sunday morning. See the police blotter for information under the LEC/Court tab.
