After a hiatus of more than a year bingo is returning to the VFW hall at 109 N. Chestnut in Jefferson.
Post 9599 commander Don Ihnken is excited to start bingo on a new night – Wednesdays. Beginning this Wednesday, Jan. 21, doors will open at 5:30 pm, with early bird games at 6:30 and regular bingo at 7 pm. The VFW auxiliary will have sandwiches available.
For years, the VFW has relied on bingo games and its all-you-can-eat suppers to raise funds for community projects. When the post was forced to close the building because black mold posed a health risk, it was the proverbial double-whammy. The post needed money for its building, but its major fundraisers were not available.
The community stepped forward to help with funding, including grants from the Greene County Community Foundation and the county board of supervisors’ Louis Dreyfus discretionary fund. The post hosted an open house before Christmas and is ready to call bingo. “We’ll give it a try. We’re hoping people will come out and support our bingo,” Ihnken said.
