Construction of a new Grand Junction Community Center is much closer with the approval Wednesday of a $220,000 Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) grant from the Vision Iowa board. “Today was a banner day for Grand Junction,” Diane Wise said Wednesday. She has been a driving force behind the project.
The grant application was for $250,000 of a total project cost of $1,158,736. The grant is contingent on raising $30,000 to complete fundraising within 90 days. “We will continue to aggressively seek funding to meet their challenge,” Wise said. “Now would be a great time for those interested in our project to send their donations.”
The new community center will include three meeting rooms that can open up to accommodate groups of more than 200 people, restrooms and a kitchen.
The committee will now start the process of demolition, meeting with the architect to finalize drawings, and preparing documents for a bid letting.
“We are indeed putting the Grand back in Grand Junction,” Wise said.
The Vision Iowa Program provides financial incentives to communities for the construction of recreational, cultural, educational or entertainment facilities that enhance the quality of life in Iowa. Currently, 396 CAT awards have been granted by the board, totaling $150,325,186.
