Greene County voters mirrored voters across Iowa, favoring Republican Gov Terry Branstad and Lt Gov Kim Reynolds, Republican Joni Ernst for the US Senate seat held by Democrat Tom Harkin, and incumbent Congressman Steve King in the Fourth Congressional District.
Unofficial results show 54.41 percent of the registered voters in Greene County – 3,703- cast ballots. Twenty-four percent of voters voted a straight ticket. Of those, 454 (52.12 percent) voted Republican, 330 (37.89 percent) voted Democrat, and 82 (9.41 percent) voted Independent.
Ernst won by a wider margin in Greene County than in the state as a whole. She received 2.063 votes (56.93 percent) in Greene County while Democrat Bruce Braley received 1,367 votes (37.72 percent). Independent Rick Stewart got 136 votes (3.75 percent). As of 11 pm Tuesday, statewide Ernst had 52 percent of the vote and Braley had 44 percent.
The same held true in the gubernatorial race. In Greene County, the Branstad/Reynolds ticket received 2,292 votes (63.25 percent) while the Democratic ticket of Jack Hatch and Monica Vernon received 1,166 votes (32.17 percent). Statewide, Branstad garnered 59 percent of the vote and Hatch got 38 percent.
Democrat Jim Mowrer fared better in Greene County in his bid to unseat Republican King in Congress than he did across the district. Mowrer received 1,485 votes (41.17 percent) here; across the district he received 37 percent. King received 2,108 Greene County votes (58.44 percent), compared to 63 percent across the district.
Incumbent Republican Chip Baltimore will return to the Iowa House of Representatives for District 47, which includes Greene County. He got 2,326 votes (67.65 percent), while challenger Democrat Hans Erickson got 1,102 (32.1 percent).
The race for secretary of state was the only state race without an incumbent on the ticket, as Republican Matt Schultz, after losing a primary bid in June for a the Third Congressional seat, announced his intention to run for the Madison County attorney position. Republican Paul D. Pate was elected as secretary of state. In Greene County, Pate received 1,735 votes (51.42 percent) and Democrat Brad Anderson received 1,482 (43.92 percent).
Greene County voters were part of the movement that re-elected incumbents to other state offices, giving the nod to incumbent Republican state auditor Mary Mosiman, incumbent Democrat treasurer of state Michael Fitzgerald, incumbent Republican secretary of agriculture Bill Northey, and incumbent Democrat attorney general Tom Miller.
