Dinner and auction kick off County Fair capital drive

Fair barns 1The Greene County Fair Association is kicking off its capital campaign to build a new swine barn with an ag dinner and auction next Tuesday, Sept. 9. Doors to Clover Hall open at 5 pm for a social hour. A barbecue dinner will be served at 6, followed by the auction of agricultural products at 7 pm.

The fair board is working to raise $265,000 for Phase One of the capital project, which calls for replacing two of the current dilapidated barns with one barn measuring 72’ X 135’. The new building will be completed before the 2015 Greene County Fair.

Tickets to the event are available from fair board members Joshua Hedges, Bob Allen, Gary Hoffman, Don Badger, Gary Betts, Ann Cunningham, Rick Humpal, Randy Love, Steve Kennedy, Shawnneene Keenan, Paul Quam, Justin Robbins, Chad Stoline, David Tipton, Barry Tronchetti, Doug Walker or Rod Wolf, by contacting fair board secretary Doug Hawn at 712-652-3685 or by email at secretary@greenecountyiowafair.com. Tickets will also be available at the door.

On the auction block will be ag supplies including seed corn and beans, chemicals and agronomic services. The items up for auction have been donated by members of the ag industry to the Greene County Fair Association. All proceeds from the auction will benefit the capital fund drive.

As Hawn explains, area farmers can purchase at auction products and services they use for their farming operations. The purchase can be deducted as an input expense, but those dollars will then benefit the youngsters who show animals at the county fair, as well as the community. “This is not just a win-win, it’s a triple win,” Hawn said. “Our farmers get what they need while putting their input dollars to work on a worthwhile project, the county wins with updated and modern fairground facilities, and the ag industry donors win by getting exposure and possibly new customers.”
