4-H, FFA members earn ribbons at Greene County Fair

4-HA total of 157 Greene County 4-H members exhibited projects at the Greene County Fair earlier this month. A fair exhibit is the result of work in the various 4-H project areas and is meant to showcase what the 4-H member learned by participating in the project.

Judging of 2014 Greene County 4-H static exhibit entries opened the fair on Tuesday, July 8. Nearly 100 exhibitors competed in the event, which was judged by a variety of judges in the areas of animals; agriculture and natural resources; creative arts; science, engineering, and technology; family and consumer sciences; and personal development. The static exhibit judging event was coordinated by static superintendents Michelle Hardin, Linda Hedges, Shari Minnehan, and JoAnne Schnebly.

The 4-H and FFA beef and bucket calf shows were held Saturday, July 12, with more than 40 exhibitors competing. Judge was Tyler Stutsman of Hills. Bucket calf interviews were conducted by Greene County 4-H volunteers Tanner Lawton and Derek Kennedy. The shows were coordinated by beef superintendents Tanner Lawton and Derek Kennedy, as well as bottle/bucket calf superintendent Matt Christensen. The beef grid contest coordinator was Mike Holden.

The 4-H and FFA beef pen of 3 show was held Friday, July 11, with five exhibitors. Judges were Beth Doran of Orange City and Justin Jacobs of Coon Rapids. Doran judged the live production portion of the contest, while Jacobs evaluated the interview and recordkeeping component. The show was organized by beef pen of 3 superintendent Mike Minnehan. The beef grid contest coordinator was Mike Holden. Several volunteers assisted with the show, as well.

The 4-H dog agility show was held Tuesday, with the 4-H dog obedience and showmanship show held Wednesday, July 9. A total of 18 exhibitors competed between the two events. Kris Goos of Pilot Mound judged the dog agility show, Ashley Kinkade of Ames judged obedience, and Savannah Ruby of Ames judged handling/showmanship. The shows were organized by dog superintendent Melisse Schilling.

The 4-H and FFA goat show was held on Friday. Six exhibitors competed in the event, which was judged by Joe Hobbs of Persia. The show was organized by goat superintendent Lizzy Gunn. Hobbs also judged the sheep show held the same day. More than 30 exhibitors competed in the show, which was organized by sheep superintendents Steve Karber and David Wolf.

The 4-H and FFA horse and pony show was held on Thursday, July 10, with the Horse Fun Show Saturday and Sunday. More than 25 exhibitors competed in the event, which was judged by Megan Gogerty of Story City. The shows were organized by horse superintendents Dawn Rudolph and Christen Davis.

The 4-H and FFA poultry show was held on Wednesday, July 9. A total of 10 exhibitors competed in the event, which was judged by Alice Nicholas of Ackworth. The show was coordinated by poultry superintendents Amanda Tiffany and Sabrina Moeller. Tiffany and Moeller also served as rabbit superintendents and coordinated that show, which was held Thursday for 17 exhibitors. Rabbit judge was Ruth Rosa of Fort Dodge.

The 4-H and FFA swine show was held Thursday, July 10. More than 30 exhibitors competed in the event, which was judged by Brice Conover of Baxter. The show was coordinated by swine superintendent James Holz.

The 4-H clothing event was held on Tuesday with 11 exhibitors. Judge was Elaine Palmer of Newell. The show was organized by clothing superintendents Jane Finch and Julie Larson. Youth participants also showcased their projects in the 4-H Fashion Show held Friday at Clover Hall.

The 4-H communications contest preceded the fair on Wednesday, June 12, at First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson. Ten exhibitors competed in the event, which was judged by Ashley Kinkade of Ames. The contest was coordinated by communications superintendent Yvette Bardole.
