Rams finish off Sergeant Bluff-Luton by 10-run rule

Regional finals up next

RamThe Greene County Ram softball team has only one more game to win to qualify for the state tournament. The Rams topped Class 3A 10th-rated Sergeant Bluff-Luton  14-2 in Sergeant Bluff Friday in a Region 1 semifinal game.

The Rams’ bats were unstoppable as the girls got 21 hits against two SB-L pitchers. Emma Saddoris set the tone for the night as she hit a home run on the first pitch of the game. That has become a trend for Saddoris; she has led off with a home run three of the last four games. Friday’s home run was her fourth for the season.

Ram pitcher Marissa Promes walked the first batter she faced and the next batter hit a home run, putting the score at 2-1 with the Warriors up. Those two runs proved to be the only for the night for the Warriors, who had finished the regular season in first place in the Missouri River Conference, composed of mostly Class 5A schools.

The Rams had a big third inning, putting together nine hits to score seven runs. At that point the Warriors changed pitchers, but the Rams scored two runs in the fourth inning and four in the sixth.Tthe game was called then at 14-2 by the 10-run rule.

Saddoris added a single to her home run and had two RBI for the night. Emily Christensen had two doubles, two singles and one RBI. Kayla Mobley singled three times and had three RBI, and Sydney Koch and Bailey Godwin each added three singles. Koch netted three RBI and Godwin got one. Hannah Onken hit two singles for one RBI and Tressa Rasmussen hit a double and a single and got one RBI. Carleigh Paup had two singles. Marissa Promes reached base four times although she didn’t get a hit. She had one RBI.

Promes was strong even after the frightful start. She struck out four batters, walked two, and allowed five hits. She is now 22-4 on the season.

The Rams have won the first two post-season games by the 10-run rule. They travel to Le Mars Monday evening to take on fourth-ranked Sioux Center in the regional final. The winner will advance to the state tournament July 21-25 in Fort Dodge.
