At the Greene County Soil and Water Conservation District’s (SWCD) January meeting the commissioners honored the recipients of the 2013 Izaak Walton League Windbreak Award. Recognition was given to Bruce Wessling of Grand Junction and Louis Hahn of Churdan for their outstanding windbreaks.
Every year on behalf of the State of Iowa, the SWCD presents the Izaak Walton League Windbreak Award to two well deserving windbreak owners. Louis Hahn received the Field Shelterbelt (5 Years old or older) Award for planting a three row windbreak in 2002. Hahn’s windbreak is three rows consisting of one row each of American cranberry, Norway spruce, and Black Hills spruce.
Wessling received the Newly Established (5 years or Less) Award for a windbreak that was planted in 2010. Wessling’s windbreak is three rows consisting of one row each of Norway spruce, Eastern red cedar, and Redoiser dogwood.
Both recipients were honored to be recognized for their hard work and dedication to their windbreaks and the Soil and Water Conservation District is very pleased to have residents in Greene County that take pride in their windbreaks.
If anyone would like to nominate a windbreak for the 2014 award they are welcome to notify the Greene SWCD at 515-386-3817. The 2014 deadline will be in June.
