Jefferson-Scranton elementary students will get some extra help with their reading in an after school tutoring program that starts next month.
Students who are in the Title I reading program will have tutoring available from 3:30 to 4:30 pm Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. According to district reading specialist Julie Neal, parents received information about the program at the recent parent-teacher conferences. Teachers will also follow up with parents of the eligible students.
Teachers with reading endorsements on their teaching certificates will provide the tutoring, with funding for the program coming from the district’s Title I funds.
“Our current education system is set up to make us believe that all students learn at the same rate. Unfortunately this is not accurate. Additional learning opportunities are necessary for some students. We have been addressing this with summer school, but have also made a decision to use Title I funds to provide after school tutoring to Title I reading students,” school superintendent Tim Christensen said.
The district has implemented a literacy policy that requires students not proficient in reading be retained in their grade unless they attend summer school. The winter-spring tutoring is a proactive approach to help students achieve their reading goals before the end of the school year.
