Vehicles, house windows targets for BB gun shooters in Grand Junction

Grand Junction was the scene of a BB gun crime spree last week. According to Greene County sheriff Steve Haupert, there is an assumption youthful offenders are the culprits, although the shooter or shooters may be older.

Between Friday at 2:28 am and Sunday at 10:51 am, there were reports of damage to windows on 14 parked vehicles in Grand Junction, including a sheriff’s office patrol vehicle as it was parked while the deputy investigated one of the incidents. Windows on cars, vans and pickup trucks were shot by BB guns.

Vehicles were damaged on Hager Street, Highway 30, Main St, Nineteenth St, Seventh St, and Elizabeth St. A window of a house was shot in the 700 block of E. Hager St, vinyl siding was shot on a house in the 600 block of  E. Main St, and criminal mischief was done to a patio door window of a house in the 800 block of N. Eleventh St.

Haupert said it appears the criminal mischief started after a fire at a mobile home the night of Dec. 26 and continued into the early morning hours of Dec. 27. He said that damage reported Saturday may have been done Friday but not reported immediately. Some of the shots appear to have been fired by a person or persons on foot, while others seemed to have been done from a vehicle.

There were several similar incidents in Jefferson a few weeks ago, Haupert added.

The incidents remain under investigation.
