Extra work needed at library site in Scranton; council plans to sell properties

The Scranton city council heard at its Nov. 12 meeting that the new Marchant Memorial Library has already come upon a cost overrun. Library board member Linda Hoyt told the city council that unexpected soil work will add approximately $30,000 to the cost of the $410,500 project. Soil tests done

during preliminary site work showed the ground was not stable enough for building. The dirt was removed and new dirt was brought in, leveled and packed.

The new 60’ X 48’ library is located on Main St, just south of the current library. Depending on the weather, the library may be open early next year.

In other business, the city council decided  to sell city-owned properties at 403 Lincoln, 800 Lincoln and 902 Maple St. The properties are being sold “as is” by sealed bid. Bids are due at the Scranton city clerk’s office by Friday, Dec. 6, at noon. The high bidder will pay the amount due in a lump sum payment plus applicable legal fees.

A public hearing will be held Tuesday, Dec. 10, at 6 pm to consider the bids and sale of the properties.

The city council also received bids to replace two furnaces and air conditioners in the metal building meeting room at the Scranton Community Center. The council approved a bid of $8,948 from Middendorf Plumbing, Heating and Cooling of Carroll.  (The Scranton Journal contributed to this article.)
