Lorene Conner, 91, of Jefferson

Funeral services for Lorene Conner, 91, of Jefferson, were held Tuesday, May 29, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jefferson.

Interment was at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Lidderdale.

Lorene Marion Kruse was born on September 9, 1926, on the Kruse farm near Lidderdale in Grant Township, Carroll County. She grew up during the Great Depression on the family farm. She attended a one-room school house and then Immanuel Lutheran School with her siblings in Lidderdale. She graduated from Carroll High School. She then attended and graduated from St. Anthony’s School of Nursing in Carroll in 1948, as did her sister Doris, six years later. Continue reading Lorene Conner, 91, of Jefferson

Fereleen Acton, 1940 – 2018

Services were held Wednesday, May 23, at St Brigid Catholic Church in Grand Junction for Fereleen Acton, 77, of Rippey.

The Rev Jeff Schleisman, pastor of the church, celebrated the Mass of the Resurrection. Heather Acton was lector. Brenda Roberts was soloist, accompanied by Lois Last.

Allen Blackburn, 1924 – 2018

Allen Terrill Blackburn was born October 10, 1924, to George S. Blackburn and Geneva (Terrill) Blackburn on a farm west of Grand Junction. Allen graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1943. He was united in marriage to Karen Madsen on September 27, 1968. Allen and Karen had two children, Terry and Judy.

Allen worked in the family seed corn business and was a row crop and livestock farmer until his retirement. Allen and Karen were honored in 2013 with the Iowa Department of Ag & Land Stewardship Century Farm designation at the Iowa State Fair. Continue reading Allen Blackburn, 1924 – 2018

Marilyn Tomlinson, 1937 – 2018

Services were held May 22 at Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jefferson for Marilyn Tomlinson, 80, of Jefferson.

The Rev Julie Poulsen, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Jefferson, offered words of comfort. Honorary casket bearers were the late Jack Harbaugh, Trenton Tomlinson and Lilianna Tomlinson.

Dr Eugene E. Houk, 1934 – 2018

A celebration of the life of Dr Eugene E. Houk, 84, of Jefferson was held May 21 at First United Methodist Church in Jefferson.

Words of comfort were offered by the Rev Julie Poulsen, pastor of the church. Gary Haupert was soloist, accompanied by Sheryl Sloan.

Services were held May 11 at Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jefferson for Dorothy Lucille Groves, 95, of Rippey.

Services were held May 10 at First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson for Marian Slininger Gibson Gulardo, 85, of Jefferson.

The Rev Gordon Moen, pastor of the church, offered words of comfort. Music was provided by pianist Keri Brooker and soloist Bill Monroe. Ronald Alva Oathout, 1935 -2018

“To fall in love with God is the greatest of all romances, to seek Him, the greatest adventure, to find Him, the greatest achievement.”– Raphael Simon.

Ron was born in Iowa City Sept. 17, 1935,  in the depths of the Great Depression.

He died April 26, 2018, in Las Vegas, NV. He was preceded in death by his father, mother and brother. Surviving are his loving wife Billie of Las Vegas; and his four children, Kurt of Iowa, Mark  of Texas, and  Steve and Sara of Colorado. There are seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. James W. Walker, 1940 – 2018

A Service of Remembrance was held Friday, March 30, at Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jefferson for James W. Walker, 78, of Grand Junction.

The Rev Daniel Emmert offered words of comfort. Honorary bearers were Doug Kaster, Dusty Clark, Bob Walker, Mike Walker, Steve Speck and John Ramirez.

Walter ‘Shorty’ Tasler, 1931 – 2018

Walter Edward Tasler, known as “Shorty”, was born December 19, 1931, in Jefferson, the son of Frank Joseph Tasler and Margaret Mary Gouger Tasler. Shorty grew up with his family of two brothers, Francis and John, and three sisters, Rosie, Bonnie and Dorothy, on a farm south of Jefferson. He farmed with a team of horses.

In September of 1952, Shorty enlisted in the United States Army. He served in the Korean War as a Screaming Eagle for the 101st Airborne. He was honorably discharged in July 1954. Continue reading Walter ‘Shorty’ Tasler, 1931 – 2018
