Highway 4 project starts next week

N. Elm St was marked for patching earlier this month.

Work on Highway 4 in Jefferson (N. Elm St) will begin next week according to resident engineer Jenny Hoskins of the Iowa Department of Transportation. The road will be resurfaced from Lincoln Way north to Highway 30.

A crew will begin patching next week. That will be followed by sidewalk work, and resurfacing will begin in 2-3 weeks. Hoskins explained the project is dependent on the completion of resurfacing Highway 144.

Once resurfacing begins it will take a week or two, depending on the weather. “Out in the country the crew can do a mile a day, but in town it takes longer because of traffic,” Hoskins said.

The road will be open for one lane of travel each way during the crew’s work day, with four lanes open when the crew isn’t working. Hoskins asked motorists to use caution.

InRoads  Paving on Ankeny has the contract. “It’s an experienced crew working with new equipment,” Hoskins said. “What they’re doing on (Highway) 144 is good. It rides really nice.”

The project could be completed by the end of September.
