Sheriff’s report – September 2017

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Saturday, Sept. 30: At 12:50 am a deputy investigated a fight in the 2200 block of Highway 25 (E Ave) in Willow Township. At 11:42 am a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 100 block of W. Main St in Grand Junction. At 11:53 am a deputy investigated a hit and run accident in the 800 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. A vehicle had struck a garage, moving it off its foundation.

At 1:13 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 100 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 8:32 pm a deputy investigated a hit and run accident in the 300 block of S. 7th St in Grand Junction. At 8:39 pm a deputy and an Iowa State Patrol trooper investigated a single car accident on 130th St near C Ave in Cedar Township. Cassondra Blankenship, 26, of Carroll swerved to miss a deer and her vehicle entered the ditch. The Churdan rescue squad transported her to Lake City with minor injuries. Her 2005 Pontiac G6 sustained only minor damage.

Friday, Sept. 29: At 9:15 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 500 block of Lincoln St in Scranton. At 2:15 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 300 block of 7th St in Grand Junction.

Thursday, Sept. 28: At 7:43 am the sheriff investigated a single vehicle accident on 228th St just east of Elizabeth St in Grand Junction. Michelle Higgins, 36, of Grand Junction was eastbound on 228th St and was blinded by the sun and entered the south ditch. There was no damage to her 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix and no citations were issued. At 5:49 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 900 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. Freedom Ore, 36, of Des Moines was arrested for trespass*. At 6:57 pm a deputy investigated a fire in the 800 block of North St in Churdan. The Churdan fire department responded and extinguished a couch that was being burned by the occupants. At 7:45 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle in the 400 block of Hardin St in Churdan. At 10:50 pm a deputy assisted the Calhoun County sheriff’s office with a rollover accident near 100th St and Highway 4 (I Ave).

Wednesday, Sept. 27: At 8:27 am a deputy investigated a violation of a no contact order in the 1100 block of Lincoln St in Scranton. At 9:50 am a deputy tried to catch a dog that was running at large in the 700 block of M Ave in Bristol Township. At 11:52 am the chief deputy investigated an assault in the jail. Zachery Waters, 21, of Paton was charged with assault* and booked on the new charge. At 12 pm the sheriff and a deputy investigated an asphalt scam in the 1800 block of 160th St in Dawson Township. At 3:51 pm a deputy investigated an asphalt scam in the 1600 block of Newberry Ave in Grant Township. At 6:53 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 500 block of S. 9th St in Grand Junction. At 7:49 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on I Ave near 235th St in Jackson Township. Russell Scott, 47, of Jefferson struck a deer with his 2017 Chevrolet Cruze causing an estimated $6,500 in damage. At 9:28 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 800 block of Hill St in Churdan.

Tuesday, Sept. 26: At 7:07 am a deputy investigated a careless driving complaint on Highway 144 and County Road E-26 (170th St). At 12:16 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of identity theft in the 400 block of County Road E-19 (140th St) in Cedar Township. At 11:06 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 700 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction.

Monday, Sept. 25: At 7:45 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on the approach to the overpass on Highway 30 near Grand Junction. Terry Gaul, 42, of Cedar Rapids was driving a 2016 Freightliner semi and went through the construction barriers to the overpass construction. Gaul stopped the truck short of the bridge. There was minor damage to the truck. Gaul suffered from a medical condition and was transported to the Greene County Medical Center. At 7:55 am the chief deputy investigated a semi vs car accident on Highway 30 at Eaton Ave east of Scranton. Roger Beckman, 65, of Carroll was driving a 2004 International semi tractor-trailer rig and went to pass Victoria Johnson, 17, of Scranton in her 2003 Buick Rendezvous. A car was coming towards the semi so he tried to get back in his lane and struck the driver’s mirror on the Buick, causing an estimated $50 in damage. At 7:14 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 25 (E Ave) near 260th St in Scranton Township. Thomas Duff, 58, of Carroll struck a deer with his 2010 Nissan Altima. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $8,000.

Sunday, Sept. 24: At 8:23 am a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 900 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 1:57 pm a deputy, Jefferson fire department, and Greene County EMS responded to the timber just north of Highway 30 near County Road P-14 west of Jefferson for a hunter who fell out of a tree stand. The hunter was taken by Greene County EMS to Greene County Medical Center with injuries. At 7:21 pm a deputy investigated a fraud complaint in the 2400 block of Sherwood Ave in Washington Township.

Saturday, Sept. 23: At 10:59 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson police department with responding to an assault in the 300 block of N. Chestnut St. At 6:13 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of dirt bikes being ridden in a vacant lot in the 900 block of Irving St in Scranton. At 7:47 pm a deputy investigated a car deer accident on County Road E-33 (190th St) near Farlin in Bristol Township. Diane Ostrander, 69, of Jefferson struck a deer with her 2013 Buick Enclave, causing an estimated $5,500 in damage to the vehicle.

Friday, Sept. 22: At 7:58 am a deputy investigated a two car accident at 9th and Main St in Grand Junction. Josiah Henderson, 23, of Grand Junction was traveling north on 9th St and failed to yield at a stop sign. He pulled out in front of a 2009 Chevrolet Traverse driving by Tashina Taylor, 35, of Grand Junction. Henderson was cited for failure to yield from a stop sign. Damage to his 2016 Hyundai Veloster was estimated at $4,500. Damage to Taylor’s vehicle was minor. At 10:48 am a deputy investigated an assault in the 600 block of Jefferson St in Scranton. At 11:46 am a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint at the Rippey school. At 12:26 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on 185th St near V Ave in Junction Township. The vehicle was a 2001 Ford Taurus. It was found on its side in the ditch with nobody around. The driver was not located. At 4:47 pm a deputy investigated a violation of a no contact order in the 500 block of Lincoln St in Scranton. At 5:30 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle in the 400 block of S. 9th St in Grand Junction.

Thursday, Sept. 21: At 11:42 am a deputy investigated a backing accident at Casey’s in Grand Junction. Michael Birmingham, 41, of Boone backed into a county secondary roads truck that was driven by Randy Frantz, 46, of Grand Junction. Birmingham was driving a 2005 Ford F150. There was minor damage to both vehicles. There was no citation issued. At 4:26 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction.

Wednesday, Sept. 20: At 8:42 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle in the 1200 block of L Ave in Bristol Township. At 10 pm a deputy assisted a Jefferson police officer with a fight in the 500 block of N. Locust St in Jefferson. At 10:54 pm a deputy removed a tree branch from the roadway on S. 13th St in Grand Junction.

Tuesday, Sept. 19: At 1:50 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an OWI arrest on Highway 30 just east of Pioneer Ave. At 9:55 am a deputy investigated an assault in the 400 block of S. Main St in Paton. At 10:10 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 300 block of 5th St N. in Grand Junction. At 12:04 pm a deputy and the sheriff investigated a violation of a no contact order in the 400 block of S. Main St in Paton. Zachary Waters, 21, of Paton was arrested for domestic abuse assault- first offense, domestic abuse assault impeding flow of blood and air, burglary- first degree, violation of a protective order, harassment- first degree, interference with official acts, and assault on person in a certain occupation.* At 3:03 pm a deputy took a report of a minor accident that involved a school bus and a car at 16th and Main St in Grand Junction. The driver called in several hours after it happened. The reporting party was given an accident report form to fill out. There is no other information available.

Monday, Sept. 18: At 1:40 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 300 block of North St in Churdan. At 3:26 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on 330th St and D Ave in Willow Township. Israel Wiles, 28, of Coon Rapids was turning onto D Ave when the shoulder gave out and his 2000 Chevrolet Express van rolled onto its side in the ditch. No one was injured in the accident. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $3,000. At 4:13 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on Highway 144 just south of Dana. Carol Dejong, 72, of Belle Plain was southbound when her vehicle entered the west ditch and struck a culvert and then a field drive. Dejong was transported to Greene County Medical Center for minor injuries. She was cited for failure to maintain control. Damage to her 2010 Buick Enclave was estimated at $4,000. Grand Junction EMS, Greene County EMS, and Grand Junction fire responded to the scene. At 5 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on V Ave and 250th St in Junction Township. Dustin Rusberg, 23, of Humboldt was driving a 2000 Grand Prix that had body damage. He swerved to miss a deer and entered the ditch. At 5:07 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 700 block of D Ave in Kendrick Township.

Sunday, Sept. 17: At 12:48 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with locating a missing juvenile. At 2:32 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on County Road E-33 (190th St) near K Ave in Bristol Township. Selena Polendo, 19, of Rockwell City was operating a 2000 Buick Lesabre and lost control and went into the ditch. Polenda was cited for failure to maintain control. There was no damage to the vehicle. At 6:09 pm a deputy investigated a head on collision on Highway 30 just west of Highway 25 near Scranton. Paul Askvig, 49, of Apple Valley, MN, was westbound when he crossed the center line and struck head on an eastbound vehicle driven by Paul Herrick, 76 of Perry. Askvig was arrested for operating while under the influence- first offense*. He was cited for driving left of center. Herrick and a passenger in his vehicle were transported by Greene County Emergency Medical Services to Greene County Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries. Damage to Herrick’s 2016 Prius exceeded value. Damage to Askvig’s 2010 Town and Country van was estimated at $6,000. The Jefferson fire department also responded to the scene. At 5:44 pm a deputy investigated a railroad crossing arm malfunction in Dana.

Saturday, Sept. 16: At 9:30 am a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 1600 block of 130th St in Paton Township.

Friday, Sept. 15: At 8:45 am a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 500 block of V Ave in Paton Township.

Thursday, Sept. 14: At 1:25 am a deputy investigated a suspicious person in the 1000 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 5:08 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the 1000 block of E. Railroad St in Grand Junction. Jeremy Antonen, 34, of Grand Junction was arrested for burglary- second degree and criminal mischief- fifth degree.* At 2:8 pm a deputy investigated a structure fire that destroyed three outbuildings in the 1400 block of 110th St in Dawson Township. At 7:02 pm a deputy investigated a fight in the 1000 block of E. Railroad St in Grand Junction.

Wednesday, Sept. 13: At 12:33 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 500 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 1:19 pm a deputy and the sheriff arrested Dray Rivera, 27, of Grand Junction on a charge of burglary- third degree*. Takayla Pittman, 28, of Perry was also arrested on a charge of burglary- third degree*. At 3:22 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of a resident having illegal prescription drugs in the 500 block of S. 12th St in Grand Junction. At 3:31 pm the sheriff investigated a power pole that had been struck by a tractor implement. There were no tractors in the area but the pole was broken and about 300 yards of wire was pulled down on the roadway. At 6:03 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 400 block of S. 9th St in Grand Junction. At 7:10 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 700 block of Railroad St in Grand Junction. At 9:51 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 500 block of N. 16th St in Grand Junction.

Tuesday, Sept. 12: At 7:47 pm Franklin Rhodes, 24, of Churdan was arrested for a Calhoun County warrant for failure to appear.* Rhodes was booked into the jail.

Monday, Sept. 11: At 3:10 pm the sheriff investigated a stolen boat and trailer. They were located in the 200 block of W. Paton St in Paton. The case is still under investigation.

Sunday, Sept. 10: At 4:52 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle rollover on Eaton Ave 1-1/2 miles north of Scranton. Zach Waters, 21, was driving a 1997 Honda Passport and lost control and rolled several times in the ditch. Waters was cited for driving while suspended, a seat belt violation, and failure to maintain control. He was uninjured in the accident. Passenger Leisha Riley, 26, of Scranton was seat belted in but had her feet on the dash of the vehicle and was flown to a Des Moines hospital for serious injuries. At 10:16 pm a deputy conducted a traffic stop and arrested Roger Good, 48, of Newton for driving while barred and driving while intoxicated.*

Saturday, Sept. 9: At 1:16 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD in the 800 block of W. Washington St with three juveniles who fled from the officer. At 6:53 am a deputy investigated a suspicious person in the 800 block of Highway 30 E in Grand Junction. At 7:25 am a deputy tried to locate dogs running at large on Highway 30 just east of Grand Junction.  At 3:52 pm a deputy conducted a traffic stop on I Ave near County Road E-57 (290th St) in Greenbrier Township. The deputy discovered stolen property from several different residences in the car. Derek Ott, 36, of Jefferson was arrested for driving while barred and burglary- third degree.* Jake Ball, 33, of Jefferson was arrested for unlawful possession of prescription drugs (three counts), burglary third- degree (three counts), violation of a no contact order, and ongoing criminal conduct. At 5:51 pm a deputy conducted an investigation into a stolen vehicle at Henderson Park. Brett West, 41, of Jamaica was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia.* The car was returned to the owner. At 6:12 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 700 block of H Ave in Bristol Township. Derek Ott and Jake Ball were charged with the burglary.

Friday, Sept. 8: At 2:48 pm a deputy attempted to stop Joseph Blackmon, 41, of Scranton for driving while suspended. A short chase throughout Scranton ended with Blackmon driving his car into a corn field traveling about 150 yards into the field. Arrest warrants have been requested for felony eluding, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia*. At 7:18 pm a deputy conducted a traffic stop in the 500 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. Christopher Christian, 37, of Grand Junction was arrested for driving while barred.*

Thursday, Sept. 7: At 12:45 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle rollover accident on 18th St N and 2nd St. Blake Toms, 20, of Breda was operating a 1996 Oldsmobile Bravada when he turned and lost control of it. It rolled onto the driver’s side of the vehicle. Toms was not injured but the vehicle was totaled. No citations were issued. At 10:58 am a deputy investigated a trespasser on the railroad at Parkland Ave and 222nd St in Grant Township.

Wednesday, Sept. 6: At 6:08 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on 210th St and V Ave in Junction Township. The driver of a semi-tractor trailer hauling cattle went to turn on to the gravel road and dropped the rear trailer tires in the ditch. The cattle had to be unloaded onto to another trailer. There was no damage to the semi and no cattle were injured. At 7:33 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle in the 400 block of Harding St in Churdan. At 9:08 pm a deputy investigated a possible assault in the 800 block of 8th St in Scranton.

Tuesday, Sept. 5: At 1 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 1400 block of Kirkwood Ave in Jackson Township. At 6:25 pm Daniel Benshoof, 64, of Perry was booked into the jail for harassment- third degree.*

Monday, Sept. 4: At 4:04 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a burglary alarm at Peoples Trust & Savings Bank. At 9:32 pm a deputy investigated a violation of a protective order in the 300 block of Irving St in Scranton.

Sunday, Sept. 3: Nothing reported.

Saturday, Sept. 2: At 6:27 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on 18th St. N in Grand Junction. Jonathan Phelps, 30, of North Dakota was operating a 2004 GMC truck and drove into the ditch. Damage was estimated at $4,000. At 6:54 am a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 100 block of 3rd St in Rippey. At 7:59 pm a deputy investigated a dog bite in the 2400 block of 337th St in Washington Township.

Friday, Sept. 1: At 7:59 am a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 100 block of 3rd St in Rippey. At 1:15 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD in the 100 block of E. Central St in Jefferson. At 9:32 pm a deputy investigated a noise complaint in the 200 block of Anyer St in Dana.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged, this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
