Sheriff’s report – July 2017

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Monday, July 31: At 10:08 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the 1000 block of X Ave in Junction Township. At 10:15 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 2300 block of M Ave in Greenbrier Township. At 2:29 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 700 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 3:11 pm a deputy investigated a cyber bullying in the 300 block of 3rd St in Rippey. At 3:29 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 2400 block of 337th St in Washington Township. At 6:19 pm a deputy investigated a fraud complaint in the 2300 block of M Ave.

Sunday, July 30: At 2:04 pm a deputy investigated a single car accident on Highway 30 near C Ave west of Scranton. Carter Fetters, 66, of Jefferson was operating a 1998 Olds Achieva and lost control of the vehicle, entered the south ditch and struck a culvert. Fetters and a passenger in the vehicle were not injured. The deputy located suspected marijuana in the vehicle. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $1,500. Fetters was cited for failure to maintain control and failure to provide insurance. He will also be charged with possession of marijuana*. At 6:34 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 800 block of Jay St in Churdan.

Saturday, July 29: At 12:07 am a deputy investigated a noise complaint on Dudley Ave in Churdan. At 7:13 am a deputy tried to put cattle back in the fence on 252nd St near the bike trail in Grant Township. At 7:29 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the 1100 block of Eaton Ave in Bristol Township. At 10:51 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the 2400 block of P Ave in Franklin Township. At 8:43 pm a deputy along with the Grand Junction fire department investigated a fire in the 400 block of W. Railroad St in Grand Junction. It was a wooden fence that was burning and no cause was found. At 10:28 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of an intoxicated person in the 200 block of 16th St in Grand Junction. Patrick Doep, 50, of Grand Junction was arrested for public intoxication (simple misdemeanor)*. At 11:22 pm a deputy assisted with putting cattle back in the fence at 255th St and Quest Ave in Grant Township.

Friday, July 28: At 7:17 am a deputy investigated a gas drive off at Casey’s General Store in Grand Junction. At 8:08 am a deputy assisted with putting cattle back in their fence on 252nd St in Grant Township near the bike trail. At 5:34 pm a deputy investigated a fire that was found to be a controlled burn on County Road P-29 (N Ave) and County Road E-18 (130th St). At 11:45 pm a deputy investigated a noise complaint at 12th and Rebecca Sts in Grand Junction.

Thursday, July 27: At 7:19 am a deputy investigated a vehicle in the ditch on 217th St. Tray Anderson, 22, of Adair was operating a 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix and got over toward the shoulder because of an oncoming car and slid into the ditch. There was no damage to the vehicle. At 7:25 am the sheriff and chief deputy investigated a single car accident on 305th St just east of R Ave in Franklin Township. Michael Correy, 57, of Story City was eastbound and swerved to miss a deer. Correy lost control of the vehicle and went into the south ditch and struck a tree. Correy had left the scene. He will be charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia*. He will be cited for leaving the scene of an accident with damage to a vehicle and failure to maintain control. Damage to Correy’s 2017 Nissan Murano exceeded value. At 11:15 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the 900 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction.

Wednesday, July 26: At 4:39 pm a deputy investigated a threat in the 400 block of E. Paton St in Paton.

Tuesday, July 25: At 4:32 am a deputy investigated an abandoned vehicle on Highway 30 and Eaton Ave east of Scranton. At 3:34 pm a deputy investigated a mail scam in the 1300 block of 190th St in Hardin Township. At 7:26 pm a deputy investigated a railroad crossing arm down at 9th St and 13th St in Grand Junction. At 7:30 pm a deputy investigated a theft of gas at Casey’s in Grand Junction.

Monday, July 24: At 7:09 am a deputy investigated a vehicle that was in the ditch unoccupied in the 900 block of 215th St in Hardin Township. The 1999 Chrysler Town and Country van was found with airbags deployed and an estimated $2,000 in damage. The operator was found to be Larry Gustoff, 54, of Jefferson. Gustoff will be cited for open container of alcohol in a vehicle and failure to maintain control. At 3:40 pm a deputy investigated a fight on County Road E-53 (235th St) and F Ave in Scranton. When the deputy arrived the subjects were gone.

Sunday, July 23: At 1:55 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 1000 block of E. Sandoe St in Grand Junction.

Friday, July 21: At 4:37 pm a deputy assisted a motorist who got out of the car and their child locked the doors in the 100 block of 3rd St in Rippey. At 4:57 pm a deputy assisted the railroad with traffic control (no location listed) after a train struck an object that was on the tracks.

Thursday, July 20: At 11:18 am the sheriff and deputies investigated a two vehicle accident on County Road E-53 (235th St) just east of R Ave west of Grand Junction. Rochelle Schaffer, 55, of Grand Junction was westbound driving a 2011 Chevrolet Impala. She attempted to pass a vehicle but pulled out in front of an eastbound county-owned dump truck driven by Gary Schmidt, 66, of Rippey. The Jefferson fire department and Greene County Emergency Medical Services, long with Mercy’s LifeFlight helicopter. Both drivers were taken by ambulance or helicopter for non-life threatening injuries. Schaffer was cited for unsafe passing and failure to provide proof of insurance- accident related. Damage to her Impala was estimated to exceed value. Damage to the 2002 Sterling dump truck was estimated at $14,000. At 3 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on Highway 144 (U Ave) just north of 180th St in Paton Township. Justin Dencklau, 24, of Otho struck the railroad crossing arms at that location. Denklau was cited for failure to obey a railroad crossing stop light. Damage to his 2011 Chevrolet Express van was estimated at $3,500. Damage to the crossing arms was estimated at $200. At 4:14 pm a deputy investigated a road blow up at 195th St and County Road P-46 (S Ave) in Hardin Township. At 5:06 pm a deputy investigated a vehicle theft in the 2400 block of H Ave in Greenbrier Township. At 9 pm Austin Moon, 22, of Boone was booked into the jail for possession of drug paraphernalia, operating while intoxicated- first offense and possession of marijuana*. At 11:50 pm a deputy assisted with branches on the roadway in the 100 block of O Ave in Dawson Township.

Wednesday, July 19: At 10:46 am a deputy investigated a harassment in the 400 block of Paton St in Paton. At 2:31 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 500 block of Sand St in Churdan. At 2:24 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 1100 block of Lincoln St in Scranton. At 10 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint on 9th St and Main St on the railroad tracks in Grand Junction.

Tuesday, July 18: At 11:19 am a deputy investigated a careless driving complaint on 16th St and Main St in Grand Junction. At 11:19 am a deputy investigated a vicious dog complaint in the 500 block of S. 12th St in Grand Junction. At 12:46 pm a deputy investigated an identity theft in the 500 block of I Ave in Highland Township. At 4:40 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 300 block of Head St in Churdan. At 6:59 pm a deputy investigated a violation of a no contact order in the 1100 block of Lincoln St in Scranton. At 7:56 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 600 block of Jefferson St in Scranton. At 8 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 600 block of 12th Street South in Grand Junction. At 8:18 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 1000 block of K Ave in Bristol Township. At 10:33 pm the sheriff and a deputy, Churdan fire and rescue, Scranton fire, and Jefferson fire were called for four Carroll County residents who were lost on the river near D Ave. Three of them were found to be home in Carroll County. The fourth was located on a sand bar near Hyde Park.

Monday, July 17: At 8:11 am a deputy investigated a careless driving complaint on 230th St (no east-west location given). The deputy found a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox in the ditch. The vehicle had been operated by Talon Church, 19, of Ogden. He had struck a power pole. Church was arrested for operating while intoxicated- first offense.* He was cited for failure to maintain control and driving without a license. Damage to his vehicle was estimated at $9,500. Damage to the utility pole was estimated at $1,100.  At  9:37 am a deputy investigated a two vehicle accident on Highway 30 at Easton Ave just east of Scranton. Earl McAlexander, 55, of Rockwell City was southbound on Eaton Ave and failed to stop at the posted stop sign. He struck the back axle of a 2015 Kenworth semi tractor-tractor that was passing on Highway 30. Driver of the rig was Kin Gorden, 57, of Nevada.  The Scranton fire department responded to the scene and cleaned up a small leak. McAlexander was cited for failure to obey a stop sign. Damage to his 2010 Ford Fusion was estimated at $8,500. Damage to the axle was estimated at $3,000. At 3:08 pm a deputy assisted with traffic control for a small spill of an unknown substance on Highway 30 at County Road P-14 west of Jefferson. At 6:28 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint at a residence in the 400 block of Lovejoy St in Rippey. At 6:49 pm Joe Blackmon, 41, of Jefferson was located in Rippey and arrested on an arrest warrant for probation violation*. At 8:15 pm a deputy investigated a road blow out on Highway 25 at County Road E-53 (250th St) south of Scranton. At 9:10 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 900 block of Locust St in Scranton. At 10:22 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 500 block of Jefferson St in Scranton.

Sunday, July 16: At 3:14 pm a deputy checked a pavement blow up at County Road P-14 (J Ave) and 280th St in Greenbrier Township. At 4:39 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 30 near L Ave west of Jefferson. Leslie Duff, 63, of Carroll struck a deer. Damage to her 2009 Toyota Corolla was estimated at $2,500.At 5:25 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 1800 block of 283rd St in Franklin Township.

Saturday, July 15: At 10:01 am a deputy investigated a domestic call in the 900 block of Cedar St in Scranton. At 6:20 pm a deputy assisted the Boone County sheriff’s office with a school bus accident. At 6:35 pm a deputy investigated a dog bite in the 500 block of S. Main St in Paton.

Friday, July 14: At 9:37 am a deputy investigated a parking complaint in the 300 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 3:26 pm a deputy conducted a traffic stop and arrested Jose Hernandez, 27, of Grand Junction for driving while license barred, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia*.  At 5:25 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on County Road E-18 (130th St) east of County Road P-29 (N Ave) in Dawson Township. Justin Goins of Lidderdale said he spilled his drink and struck a guard rail to a bridge. Damage to his 2005 Ford F150 pickup truck was estimated at $2,000. Damage to the bridge in under investigation.

Wednesday, July 12: At  3:40 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 900 block of R Ave in Hardin Township. At 8:15 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 2400 block of 337th St in Washington Township.

Tuesday, July 11: At 7 am a deputy tried to located a dog running on Highway 30 near Oakland Ave east of Jefferson. At 10:49 am a deputy and the Jefferson fire department assisted with a sprayer that blew a hose on 235th St. The deputy conducted traffic control while the fire department cleaned up the hydraulic fluid. At 6:42 pm a deputy investigated a vicious dog on 11th St in Grand Junction.

Monday, July 10: At 9:55 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 1100 block of Lincoln St in Scranton. At 10:08 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of a laser shining cars on 230th St and Highway 144 south of Grand Junction. At 11:42 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 300 block of East Main St in Grand Junction.

Sunday, July 9: At 2:10 pm a deputy investigated a traffic accident at the Spring Lake concession stand. Jade Ayala, 17, of Paton was backing her 2012 Ford Focus but struck a barrier pole, pushing it into a parked 2012 Buick Enclave owned by Stacey Cline, 45, of Gowrie. Damage to Ayala’s vehicle was estimated at $2,000. Damage to Cline’s vehicle was estimated a $1,500.

Saturday, July 8: At 3:59 pm a deputy investigated a theft on Highway 30 at Hillcrest Ave west of Jefferson. At 9:43 pm a deputy investigated a fireworks complaint in the town of Paton.

Friday, July 7: At 1:46 am a deputy arrested Douglas Shutt, 56, of grand Junction on arrest warrants from Guthrie County. At 12:07 pm a deputy investigated a fireworks complaint in the northeast part of Grand Junction. At 6:10 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an accident at Lincoln Way and Cedar St. At 6:57 pm a deputy investigated a violation of a protective order by an inmate. At 8:54 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an assault in the 100 block of N. Olive St. At 10:33 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 300 block of 130th St in Cedar Township.

Thursday, July 6: At 9:43 am a deputy picked up a German shepherd in the 1200 block of 110th Street in Highland Township and took it to PAWS. At 9:01 am a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint on D Ave at a Greene County gravel pit. At 4:57 pm a deputy conducted a traffic stop on Highway 30 and Granite St east of Scranton. Bryant Anderson, 29, of Fort Dodge was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia and carrying weapons*. Anderson was also cited for excessive speed. At 5:47 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a traffic accident on Highway 30 and N. Elm St. At 7:57 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 1100 block of Lincoln St in Scranton.

Wednesday, July 5: At 2:26 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 300 block of 1st St in Rippey.

Tuesday, July 4: At 10:32 am a deputy investigated a theft on 110th St in Adaza. At 10:54 pm a deputy assisted the Boone County sheriff’s office with a rollover accident on 130th St one mile into Boone County.

Monday, July 3: At 12:07 am a deputy investigated an assault at the Squirrel Hollow campground. At 8:47 pm a deputy investigated a fireworks complaint in the 300 block of State St in Paton. At 9:05 pm a deputy investigated a fireworks complaint in the 300 block of North 17th St in Grand Junction. At 11:54 pm a deputy investigated a fireworks complaint in the 600 block of Jefferson Street in Scranton.

Sunday, July 2: At 9:22 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction. At 1:31 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 800 block of 110th St in Highland Township. At 6:24 pm a deputy investigated a driving complaint in the 600 block of Jay St in Churdan. At 11:09 pm a deputy investigated an assault complaint in the 500 block of N. 16th St in Grand Junction.

Saturday, July 1: At 9:49 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the 800 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 2:53 pm a deputy investigated a ditch fire on County Road P-33 (S Ave) just north of Highway 30. Grand Junction fire put the fire out. At 6:59 pm a deputy investigated a ditch fire on P-33 near 140th St in Dawson Township. Grand Junction fire put the fire out. At 10:37 pm a deputy investigated a fireworks complaint on Jefferson St in Scranton. At 11:10 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint on Highway 30 and County Road P-46 (W Ave) east of Grand Junction.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged, this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
