Ram softball at 16-13 in regular season play

The Greene County softball team completed regular season action last week, going 3-1. The Rams downed North Polk, Saydel and Roland-Story but dropped a contest to South Hamilton.

Greene County is 16-13 overall this season with an 8-8 mark in Heart of Iowa Conference action.

Regional tournament play starts this week. This year the Rams will be competing in Class 4A, moving up a class from 3A. They meet Perry on Thursday, July 7, in Perry at 7 pm. The winner will take on Norwalk on Saturday, July 9, in Norwalk.

GC 7 ~ North Polk 2

Greene County took the early lead and used strong defense to defeat North Polk 7-2 on Monday, June 27. The Rams scored a run in the first and second inning and then blasted the Comets for five runs in the third. NP posted their two runs in the fourth. The remainder of the game was scoreless.

Sophomore Megan Durbin homered twice and freshman Jenna Beyers slammed a round tripper to lead the Ram offense. Durbin picked up two RBI while Beyers was charted with three. Carleigh Paup added a single and a double. Hannah Promes rapped two base hits for one RBI. Laurin Lyons had a hit and Sydney Koch notched an RBI.

Promes allowed just four hits and two walks. Promes struck out three Comet batters. Both NP runs were earned.

S Hamilton 6 ~ GC 4

The Rams fell to South Hamilton for the second time this season 6-4 on June 28. Greene County took the early lead, 3-2, but gave up four runs in the third while adding one of their own for a 6-4 Hawk lead. That was all the scoring as neither team crossed home plate in the final four frames.

The Rams out hit the Hawks nine to six and both teams had three errors. Sydney Koch belted two doubles on the night and Megan Carey rapped two base hits and swiped an extra base. Beyers and Laurin Lyons picked up RBIs along with a single each. Megan Durbin and Faith Davis also registered base hits.

Promes took the pitching loss despite allowing five earned runs on six hits. She struck out six and did not walk a batter.

GC 9 ~ Saydel 8

The Rams rallied to tie the game with Saydel at eight in the sixth inning and then pushed the winning run across the plate in the seventh to beat a very good Saydel squad 9-8 on June 29.

Greene County trailed 5-2 after four innings and 8-4 after five. A four-run sixth tied the game at 8-8, and a run in the top of the seventh stood up for the one run victory. Beyers was the winning pitcher in relief of starter Promes. Beyers went the final 2-2/3 innings and allowed no runs on one hit, no walks, and she struck two batters out. Promes allowed eight runs, all earned, on eight hits and one walk. She fanned two batters.

Durbin carried the big stick, belting a homer and a single for two RBIs. Izzy Bravard was three for three with two singles and a double, and she drove in a run. Paup had two RBIs and one hit. Slapping singles were Carey, Koch, Promes and Beyers. Koch was credited with two RBIs and a stolen base. Promes also had two RBIs.

GC 12 ~ R-S 7

In the final contest of the regular season, Greene County rolled to a 12-7 victory over Roland-Story. The Rams scored four runs in the third and held a 7-0 lead after five innings. The Norsemen rallied, scoring five runs in the sixth and two in the seventh. The Rams expanded their lead to 10-5 in the sixth and padded the advantage with two more runs in the seventh.

Greene County had a three-run home run from Paup and a two-run shot from Durbin. Paup also singled. Koch had four RBI including three on a double and another on a ground ball out. Bravard doubled with Carey, Davis, and Lyons collecting singles.

Promes picked up the win on the mound. She threw five shutout innings, then yielded five hits and four earned runs while walking one batter and striking out two. Beyers tossed the final two frames, issuing three hits, two runs, walked two and struck out one.
