MEETING NOTICE: We will have our annual “Christmas in July” on Saturday, July 5, at the Pizza Ranch in Jefferson.  Meet there a little before noon.  The meal will be on your own.  Please bring an item to donate to the Action Resource Center (food pantry).  Also, bring along an item or a story for show and tell.  I know all of you have many stories you can share about your family history research.  Friends and family are welcome to attend.  The more the merrier!

COUNTY FAIR TIME: Arlene Johnson asked me to remind you that entry day is Thursday, July 10.   Please bring your entries to the east door of Clover Hall between 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

OLD COUNTRY SCHOOL RECORDS: If you are searching for old rural school records in Iowa – or if you are in possession of some that should be preserved – this information should be of special interest to you.  The Center for the History of Rural Iowa Education and Culture at the University of Northern Iowa is dedicated to the preservation, organization and dissemination of unique and rare materials documenting the history of Iowa’s rural school system.

The Center maintains collections of historic textbooks, artifacts, rural school related reference books, oral histories, photographs, and ephemera as well as a collection of official school records transferred from the state’s Area Education Agencies.  Holdings cover 86 of Iowa’s 99 counties and date from the mid 19th through the mid 20th century.

Reference services are available Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Call 319-273-7614  or email Dustin Witsman, project archivist, dustin.witsman@uni.edu or Katherine Martin, project director and head of collections and museums, katherine.martin@uni.edu.  Visit them online at www.uni.edu/museum/ruralschool.

ANCESTRY.COM HACKED: If you have been trying to research any of the Ancestry or Rootsweb pages recently, I think they are all back up and running now.  It not only affected Ancestry.com but also all the other sites which they control:  Findagrave, Rootsweb, Family Tree Maker, Genealogy.com and others.  The site was hacked in mid June.  They didn’t lose any information, but they have changed the rules on some of the pages that accept your family history so please take note.    Even our own Greene County page which is hosted free by Rootsweb was off line for a while.

CONTACT US: Our web page is located at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~iagcgs/.  Email us at gcgsiowa@hotmail.com or P O Box 133, Jefferson IA 50129-0133.
