Abe Lincoln liked simple food, his wife liked fancier fare

Abraham Lincoln, America’s 16th president, sat down for breakfast and usually ate an egg and an apple. His favorite food was chicken fricassee, a stew in a white sauce.

Lincoln’s diet and his wife’s penchant for fancy food and tableware will be the topic of a Sept. 20 Greene County Historical Society program at the Museum, 219 E. Lincoln Way in Jefferson.

At the free 2 pm event, Jed Magee and Jacque Andrew, both of Jefferson, will talk about what was on the Lincolns’ dining table.

“Lincoln sometimes forgot to eat,” says Magee, an amateur Lincoln historian. “When he remembered, he liked apples, ginger cookies, mock turtle soup and corn dodgers.”

Magee will give the audience the recipe for the dodgers at the program.
