Four local veterans of the U.S. Naval Submarine Service will tell about their adventures under the sea at a Greene Conty Historical Society program Friday, Sept. 4, at St. Patrick Catholic Church west of Churdan.
Randy Winkelman of Scranton, who served aboard the USS Jack from 1983 to 1989, will bring along three fellow submariners to talk about life beneath the waves. They are Mike McGowen of Jefferson, Mike Newbauer of Grimes and Otis Brookins of Bagley. Each plumbed the depths of the seas.
Winkelman was stationed out of Groton, Conn., the submarine capital of the world, and ran silent and deep through the North and South Atlantic Oceans, the Mediterranean and other seas, He was in the weapons department, assuring that torpedoes arrived at their targets.
Neubauer will bring a sub simulator to the program, which will allow the audience to experience a sub as it dives and resurfaces.
