Public hearing set on Linduska Field restroom facility

The Greene County Community Schools board at its Aug. 12 meeting set the Sept. 9 regular meeting as the time for a public hearing on bids for the new restroom building at Linduska Field. Information is being sent to potential bidders on the project. After the public hearing, the board will approve bid specifications, form of contract, and the proposed cost of materials and labor.

Construction will begin yet this fall but won’t be completed until spring. The project is estimated at $410,000, with funds from the physical plant and equipment levy (PPEL).

The board approved the first reading of new policies required by the passage of SF 2428 during the 2026 legislative session. The bill dictates when students can be removed from a classroom for disruptive behavior. The bill mandates how school districts deal with removing students from classrooms for disruptive behavior. There are two separate policies, as schools are required to follow the Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) for students in special education.

Superintendent Brett Abbotts explained the draft policy was written by the Iowa Association of School Boards. He said the policy will be fleshed out more before a second reading at the Sept. 9 meeting.

The board also approved changes to the bus driver handbook. The handbook now includes requirements that bus drivers adhere to the handbook governing all district employees, that they maintain a “clean and orderly vehicle” and their personal hygiene, and that drivers must report immediately any issues with vehicles. The first day of school is Monday, Aug. 24 for students in grades K-12, and Wednesday, Aub. 26 for students in pre-kindergarten.
