Last week Congressional House Representative Zach Nunn visited Greene County. While here he toured a manufacturing site and viewed the renovated school that will soon house residents at the Jeffersonian. All good things.
That evening, he was hosted along with other Republican public servants at the Courtyard. Constituents should interact with their government representatives. Again, all good.
I have not used this column to throw or enter red meat dialogue in the past, but I have taken personal afront from an accusation and can no longer not speak/write.
I was troubled when the current Republican president demolished the White House’s East Wing.
I was offended when he called a female reporter who was simply doing her job “Piggy.”
I felt remorse when the front lawn of the White House was turned into a boxing arena.
When the reflecting pool between the Lincoln and Washington Monuments was “refurbished” with the outcome being a disaster from peeling paint, and a blame game about vandalism, it was saddening.
Previously I have avoided indicating my displeasure, but I can no longer be quiet, when as a registered Democrat I am accused by GOP Greene Countians of being a Communist.
The Facebook quote from the August 4, Greene County Iowa GOP, ……. “Now its [it is] up to all of us to do our part to keep the U.S.A. free and fair as a Constitutional Republic, vs. a Democrat Socialist/Communist country.’’
When checking for the definition of a Communist, …. “a political and economic ideology that advocates for a society in which means of production are owned collectively or by the state; social classes are eliminated; wealth and resources are distributed according to need, rather than market competition.”
As a Democrat I do believe that all children should be fed, that a “livable wage” should be paid to workers, that education be provided for our youth, that health care should be available; BUT THAT DOES NOT MAKE ME A COMMUNIST.
I know numerous community leaders and people from Greene County. I serve on several civic and volunteer boards and committees with them. I have social friends that I have sung with in Greene County Singers. I do not believe any of them are Communists.
My values spring from the 1950-60’s. Communism was / is brutal. I do not seek Communism for our country.
I very much appreciated the positive interaction I had with one of the members of the Greene County Republicans during the Greene County Fair. I do believe there is more that binds us together than divides us.
We as citizens of Greene County need to search for the concepts and values that both parties can identify and agree upon. We do not need to make up culture wars when we have high nitrates in our water, and first in the Nation cancer rates for Iowa.
Let us become citizen patriots together for Greene County, the State of Iowa, and our Nation.
