Robotic companion cats join residents at Regency Park

Funded by grant to First Presbyterian Church mission team

A new initiative is underway to bring comfort and companionship to local seniors, thanks to a grant and some innovative technology. The First Presbyterian Church mission team recently announced it has received a grant from the Presbytery of North Central Iowa to purchase and deliver six robotic comfort companion cats to the residents of Regency Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Social isolation and cognitive decline are significant challenges faced by many individuals residing in long-term care facilities. Often separated from frequent contact with loved ones and friends, senior citizens are highly vulnerable to feelings of depression and anxiety. This initiative aims to directly combat those emotional hurdles using realistic, interactive technology.

The robotic companions—designed primarily as lifelike cats and dogs—are engineered to provide both emotional comfort and vital tactile stimulation. They feature realistic fur, movements, and authentic sounds, such as purring and meowing, responding dynamically to a person’s touch. The benefits extend beyond individual therapy. The introduction of these companion animals provides facility staff with an effective, gentle tool to help soothe residents. Furthermore, the pets act as a natural conversation starter, paving the way for improved cognitive exercises and fostering increased social interaction and connection between the residents themselves. “Our goal was to address the emotional needs of our senior community members,” said LeAnn Monaghan.

“On a personal note, my father was a resident of Regency Park for 10 months last year before he passed away in November. My mom visited him nearly every day while he was in the nursing home. She witnessed many residents who had little contact with loved ones when she visited my dad. Since he passed away, my mother was very lonely,” she continued.

“My sister had the idea to purchase a companion cat for her. This has provided her with great comfort. She has also taken her cat to visit the facility that cared for my dad. She was met with great enthusiasm to interact with her cat, Mr. Whiskers. Her wish is to provide others with the stimulation and comfort that she has experienced from her kitty. We are incredibly grateful to the Presbytery of North Central Iowa and the generosity of our membership for recognizing this need and providing the funding to make this delivery to Regency Park possible.”
