Jefferson Telecom once again partnered with Greene County Elementary School to provide bicycles to local 4th graders, helping students head into summer with both excitement and an important reminder about bike safety.
This year, 30 students received bikes through the annual initiative led by Jamie Daubendiek, general manager of Jefferson Telecom, and his wife Cindi, GCCSD board president. The program was created to encourage outdoor activity while also educating students about the importance of wearing a helmet every time they ride.
As part of the presentation, students heard the powerful story of Jamie’s sister, Jenny Robinson, who survived a biking accident while training for a triathlon in Colorado in 2010. Jenny was struck by a truck, thrown nearly 50 feet, and hospitalized for months with serious injuries. Her helmet is credited with saving her life. To help reinforce that message, Daubendiek shared the rebuilt bike as a visual reminder of how quickly accidents can happen and why helmet safety matters.
“We hope the kids enjoy the bikes and make great memories this summer,” said Daubendiek. “At the same time, we want them to understand how important it is to protect themselves every time they ride.”
The bike presentation also aligned with Greene County Elementary’s annual Bike to School Day held on May 6, helping reinforce the importance of bicycle safety while celebrating the fun and freedom that comes with riding. The event created a meaningful opportunity to encourage students to stay active, ride responsibly, and wear their helmets every time they ride.
The bike giveaway complemented the school’s bicycle safety curriculum led by physical education teacher Elijah Davis. In addition, the Kiwanis Club of Jefferson generously provided helmets to all 4th grade students.
