Hundreds of vintage Valentines will be on display at an open house at the Greene County Historical Museum, 219 E. Lincoln Way in Jefferson, on Valentine’s Day, Saturday, Feb. 14.
The cards are from the collection of Mikki Schwarzkopf of Ames, a former Jefferson resident.
She has donated the valentines to the Museum.
Schwarzkopf has been amassing the collection since she was a girl, following her mother’s interest in the greetings. Since then, friends have given her cards they’ve found in antique shops. And many of the heartfelt messages were found in trunks in elderly relatives’ attics, and passed on to Schwarzkopf. Open house attendees may recognize some of the names of local people who sent or received the love notes years ago.
The open house runs from 9 am to noon, with a Valentine trivia program at 10 am. Refreshments provided by Deal’s Orchard will be served. Snow date for the event is Feb. 21, same time, same place.
