Stories about Native Americans who lived along Greene County’s creeks and Raccoon River in the 19th century will be shared by Janet Durlam at a Greene County Historical Society program on Friday, Nov. 7, at the Scranton Methodist Church.
The free 12:45 pm program follows a noon lunch prepared by church members.
Native Americans passed through the county, following game into Carroll County and beyond, says Durlam, a former elementary school teacher. “They were Meskwakis, a part of the Fox and Sauk tribes,” she says. “They interacted with early settlers in Greene County.”
Durlam found information about the contacts in several places, including in journals kept by several early settlers.
The noon lunch costs $12. Reserve a seat at the lunch table by calling 515-386-4408 or a History Society community contact by Tuesday, Nov. 4.
