Greene County district court, week ending Oct. 17

In Greene County district court Devin Christopher Hackfort, 29, of Jefferson was sentenced Oct. 15 to 10 years in prison after he changes his plea to guilty to a charge of arson- second degree. He was sentenced to five years in prison on a charge of willful injury causing bodily injury, amended from attempted murder; to two years in prison on a charge of assault on persons in certain occupations- bodily injury; and to one year in prison on a charge of assault on persons in certain occupation. The prison terms are concurrent and he is to receive credit for time served. The fines and surcharges were suspended on each count except the charge of assault on persons in certain occupation. He was fined $430 with a $64.50 surcharge on that count. Charges of eluding and harassment- first degree were dismissed. The charges are related to a house fire in Paton last March. Linda Sue Moran, 64, of Denison was sentenced to two years in prison after she changed her plea to guilty to a charge of operating while intoxicated- second offense. All but seven days of the prison term was suspended and she was placed on probation to Boone/Greene County Probation for one year. She must complete all recommendations of a substance abuse evaluation at her own expense. She must also complete a state-approved drinking drivers12-hour impaired drivers education course. She may complete the Des Moines Area Community College or other state-approved OWI program in lieu of four days of the jail term. Moran was fined $1,875 with a $281.25 surcharge. She must pay restitution for her court-appointed attorney’s fees not to exceed $500 and $100 court costs. A charge in magistrate court of simulated public intoxication was dismissed. Travis Ryan Armstrong, 36, of Scranton was sentenced to 180 days in jail after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of operating while intoxicated. All but two days of the jail term were suspended and he was placed on probation to Boone/Greene County Probation for one year. He must complete all recommendations of a substance abuse evaluation at his own expense. He may complete the DMACC 48-hour alcohol education program in lieu of the jail term. He must also complete a drinking drivers course. He was fined $1,250 with a $187.50 surcharge. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail on a charge of possession of marijuana; the jail term was suspended. he was fined $430 with a $64.50 surcharge. Court costs were $100. (Sentencing: McCarville)

Jared Duane Roberts, 54, of Tama was sentenced to 180 days in jail, with all but two suspended, after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of operating while intoxicated. He was placed on probation to Boone/Greene County Probation for one year. He must complete all recommendations of a substance abuse evaluation at his own expense. He may complete the DMACC 48-hour alcohol education program in lieu of the jail term. He must also complete a drinking drivers course. He was fined $1,250 with a $187.50 surcharge; one-half is waived because he has already obtained a temporary restricted license. Court costs were $140. (Sentencing: McCarville)

Garrett Matthew Peterson, 25, of Scranton was sentenced to one year in jail after he pleaded guilty to a charge of operating while intoxicated- second offense. (He was initially charged with OWI- first offense, but he had been granted a deferred judgment on a Polk County OWI charge in 2021.) He was sentenced to one year in jail, with all but seven days suspended. He was placed on probation to Boone/Greene County Probation for one year. He must complete all recommendations of a substance abuse evaluation at his own expense. He may complete the DMACC 96-hour alcohol education program in lieu of four days of the jail term. If he chooses not to do the DMACC course he must also complete a 12-hour drinking drivers course. Peterson was fined $1,875 with a $281.25 surcharge. Court costs were $100. (Sentencing: McCarville)

Brett Michael Roberts, 32, of Ottumwa was sentenced to 14 days in jail, with credit for time served, after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of driving while license barred. He may save the remaining jail time in seven-day increments. He was fined $855 with a $128.25 surcharge; both were suspended. Zachary David Dearborn, 32, of Grand Junction was granted a deferred judgment after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of operating while intoxicated. He must pay a civil penalty of $1,250, one-half of which will be waived if he obtains a temporary restricted license. He was placed on probation to Boone/Greene County Probation for one year. He must complete all recommendations of a substance abuse evaluation at his own expense, and he must complete a drinking drivers course. Court costs were $100. (Sentencing: McCarville)

Jasper J. Scheuermann, 37, of Bagley was fined $855 with a $128.25 surcharge after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of driving while license barred- habitual offender. He was placed on probation to Boone/Greene County Probation for one year, and he must perform 40 hours of community service in Greene County. Candi Joelle Wenger, 35, of Grand Junction was sentenced to 10 days in jail after she changed her plea to guilty to a charge of driving while license barred. She is to receive credit for time served, and she may serve the sentence in five-day increments. She was fined $855 with a $128.25 surcharge, both of which were suspended. Persons pleaded not guilty to charges as follows: Robert John William Gilmore, 39, of Jefferson, possession of marijuana; Gary Paul Sinkular, 55, of Jefferson, tattooing without a permit; Haleigh Marie Conover, 33, of Montezuma, operate vehicle without owner’s consent; and Sarah Dawn Schwery, 48, of Jefferson, operating while intoxicated- second offense. Trial dates were set for Jan. 1, 2026 in every case.

Cases were initiated in district court during the week ending Oct. 17 as follows: Yerson Antonio Salvin, 23, of Waukee, driving while license barred; and Phillip Harry Odin, 51, of Rippey, domestic abuse assault causing injury or mental illness.
