Services for Mickey Starr, 82, of Jefferson, will be held Thursday, August 21, 2025, at Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jefferson. Burial will take place at Union Cemetery, Coon Rapids. Memorials are suggested to PAWS in Jefferson.
Lois “Mickey” Sanders Starr, was born May 28, 1943, in Columbus, Ohio to W.D. “Bus” Sanders and Darlene Baker Schreier. Mickey graduated from Jefferson High School in 1961. She opened the first pizza house in Jefferson in 1966.
Mickey had three children, Niki (Barry) Winger of Lathrop, MO; Brent (Peg) Starr of Sunny Isles Beach, FL; and Dena Starr of Albert Lea, MN; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister Donna Gebbert of Weslaco, TX. She was preceded in death by both parents and brothers Ken and Keith Sanders.
Mickey spent 35 years in Denver, CO where she sold real estate and then worked for the Bureau of Reclamation managing a Unix local LAN and worked with FEMA, volunteering for four hurricanes. Mickey retired in 2005, moving back to Iowa, eventually landing in Jefferson, which she loved. She was a member of the Elks Lodge. She volunteered at the food pantry, served on the board and delivered meals at Congregate Meals, Greene County Medical Center auxiliary, and Greene County Public Health. This is how she met so many nice people.
