Medicap Pharmacy now independent, Greene County Pharmacy

Publishers note – The following was provided by Sam Youngblood, RPh/owner

We are proud to announce an exciting change at your local pharmacy. As part of our commitment to providing the community with quality, affordable care, we’re changing our name to Greene County Pharmacy. This update marks not only a fresh identity, but also a strategic move to help us navigate the challenges of an increasingly difficult healthcare landscape.

Our decision to move away from the Medicap name allows us to eliminate costly franchise fees, switch to a new wholesaler for better medication pricing, and introduce other cost-saving measures. These steps are aimed at ensuring the long-term sustainability of the pharmacy — so we can continue serving you and your family for years to come.

More than just a new name, Greene County Pharmacy represents our deep roots in this community. As a family-owned business, we are not part of a larger chain. We are your neighbors — personally invested in the success of our pharmacy and the well-being of those we serve.

The pharmacy industry is facing unprecedented challenges: rising drug costs, shrinking insurance reimbursements, and aggressive tactics by pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) that steer patients toward chain and mail-order services. These forces have made it harder than ever for independent pharmacies to stay open. In 2024 alone, nearly 30 pharmacies in Iowa shut their doors due to these challenges.  But we’re adapting, and taking proactive steps to reduce costs so we can keep delivering the personalized care you trust.

One exciting development tied to these changes is that we are actively working to expand the range of insurance plans we can accept. If you’ve had to transfer your prescriptions to another pharmacy or mail-order service in the past, there’s a chance you’ll soon be able to transfer them back to us.

Even if we are not yet able to fill your prescriptions, we’d love to still see you. Consider stopping by for your other health and wellness needs — from supplements and first aid supplies to gifts and greeting cards. Every purchase you make at our pharmacy helps keep independent businesses like ours alive and thriving in the community. Supporting local businesses truly makes a meaningful difference, and we’re grateful for your continued trust and support.

While our name is changing, everything else you count on stays the same. You’ll still see the same friendly faces behind the counter, offering the same personal, attentive service you can only get from a local, independent pharmacy. We’re still here for you — just with a new name: Greene County Pharmacy.
