Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 6, at First United Methodist Church in Jefferson for Freddie Howard German, 78, of Jefferson. Interment will be at Paton Township Cemetery, Paton.
Freddie German passed away peacefully Saturday, November 30, 2024, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.
Freddie was born May 11, 1946 in Houston, TX, to Lawrence and Veta German.
Freddie and Jolene German united in marriage on November 28, 1992, a day that marked the beginning of a beautiful journey together. Their story began at Stinky’s Bar and Grill in Dana, Iowa, where the rhythm of country music brought them together, and the joy of dancing ignited a spark that would last a lifetime. For 32 wonderful years, Freddie and Jolene created a loving home in Jefferson, filled with laughter, simplicity, shared dreams, and countless cherished memories.
Throughout his lifetime, Freddie was a dedicated employee and very proud of his work as an electrician. He worked for Frigidaire in Jefferson for many years, creating lasting friendships and memories. Upon retiring from Frigidaire, Freddie worked part-time at Home Care Medical and did tax work for H&R Block. Most recently, Freddie worked for Jeremy Richards at Countywide Electric. His work mantra was, “Find a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.”
Of all the roles Freddie embraced throughout his life, none brought him more joy than that of a devoted grandfather and great-grandfather. His passion for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren knew no bounds as he made it a point to attend countless sporting events. You didn’t have to see Freddie to know he was there; his spirited “WHOO WHOO” echoed through the stands, a spirited shout of support that resonated with love and encouragement for his favorite team.
Freddie will forever hold a special place in our hearts as the cherished handyman of the family. No project was ever too big or too small for him; he approached each task with unwavering dedication and a warm smile. From building sturdy fences and beautiful decks to transforming basements into welcoming spaces, his craftmanship was a testament to his love for family and friends. Countless shop projects and all the electrical work needed were completed with precision and care, reflecting his remarkable talent. Freddie was always the first to lend a hand, embodying a heart of gold that touched everyone he met. His generosity and spirit will live on in the memories we share, reminding us of the love he poured into every endeavor.
When Freddie wasn’t working on a project for others he could be found in his blue recliner chair cheering on the Dallas Cowboys or Iowa State Cyclones. Growing up in Texas, Freddie’s heart had belonged to the Cowboys since their inception in 1960, a loyalty that only deepened over the years. Before and after each game, you’d often find him in his workshop, tinkering with his tools or restoring his cherished ’54 Ford truck. For Freddie, the perfect blend of ball games and shop work was always accompanied by a salty margarita, a simple pleasure that reflected his zest for life.
Freddie was preceded in death by his parents, six siblings, and granddaughter Katie Gordon. He is survived by his wife Jolene German; daughters Teresa (Dan) Cross, Lori (Richard) Gordon, and Lana (Randy) McDonald; his son Trevor (Rachael) Wishman; grandchildren Alex, Matthew, Kylie, Ellie, Marlie, Drake, Stephanie, Emily, and Zoe; and great-grandchildren Ember, Everly, and Cam.
As we bid farewell to Freddie, let us honor his memory in the way he would have cherished most – surrounded by love, laughter, and the comforting reminder of shared memories.
