The Scranton city council had a packed agenda for its Aug. 13 meeting, handling the business during the hour-long meeting.
Dawn Rudolph gave the Community Center report noting July was a busy month with basketball and pickleball. Midwest Wellness Recovery will be using the facility three mornings a week. She reminded the council they approved the repair of the upstairs air conditioning. When the part was delivered, the downstairs air conditioning went out and it was the same part, so it was used downstairs and the upstairs still is in need of repair.
A fundraising event is planned on Saturday, Sept. 7, to garner money to put a new roof on the building. This will include a meal by Lidderdale Country Store, ice cream bar and lots of games for all ages.
The library staff is planning a color run/walk fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 19. The council approved the idea. Two new library board members were approved on a split vote. Tanya Jackson and Peggy Hoyt will join the board. Ashley Squibb cast the dissenting vote. Because the board is composed of all females, the other vacancy should be filled by a male.
Markus Rosenow provided the public works report. Workers are attending educational classes. New risers will be installed by the blacktop. The council approved a $1 per hour raise for him.
Ken Paxton spoke during open forum about Greene County Development Corporation. Sara Huddleston, the Multicultural Family Resource Center director was also in attendance. This is a program that helps multicultural families with translation, job search and schooling. Huddleston is bilingual and helps with translation as needed. Paxton touched on a program to assist veterans with training as they leave the military. Both these programs are aimed at attracting people to Greene County.
Council member Squibb spoke on recording meetings and posting them on YouTube so people can see what is going on within the city. She also mentioned the council needs to work together and communicate with each other to make Scranton great again.
