Julia McCollom was born at home in Jefferson to Walter and Irene (Lybarger) Wright on February 19, 1932. She was the youngest of seven children born into this union.
Growing up, Julia attended the Jefferson schools. In 1950 she married Robert McCollom of Grand Junction. They were the proud parents of four children, and became grandparents to 11 and great-grandparents to 19, whom she loved all so very much.
Julia lived with her husband in Rhode Island while he served in the Navy where two of her children, Kathy and Terry, were born. Rick and Randy were born in the Jefferson Hospital in Jefferson.
Julia stayed at home until all the children were in school. She loved working in her gardens so she could can food for the winter and make pies to give away. She also loved to plant lots of flowers and watch them grow. You could always find her helping people, however she could.
Her work career included Aimee’s Grocery Store, Fairmont’s Foods and the Jefferson Community Schools where she sold lunch tickets and helped cook food for all three schools over 33 years. Julia was a member of the Jefferson Gospel Open Bible Church for many years where she loved her church family. Christmas became her favorite holiday so much that she had a “Christmas Room”. There was always a big gathering at her home for Christmas until she wasn’t able to have everyone come any longer.
Julia McCollom passed away in Jefferson on July 28, 2024, at the age of 92 years. She is survived by her children Rick (Joan) McCollom, Kathy (Mark) Cranston, Terry (Roxanne) McCollom and Randy (Susan) McCollom. She is also survived by all 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; other relatives; and many, many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Irene Wright; husband Robert McCollom; brothers Walt and Max Wright; and sisters Charlotte Miner, Ellen Godwin, Betty Bishop and Joanne Bose. And as she wrote in her notes: “So prepare yourself to meet me in Heaven, those all that have gone before me.”
