The Greene County boys soccer season came to a crushing end May 20 in Humboldt when the Rams fell 2-1 to the 13-1 Wildcats.
The match was scoreless for the first half. After halftime, the Wildcats managed to score twice in just 12 minutes. Gesser Gutierres kicked a goal, Nathan Behne with the assist. With 10 minutes left, hope was not lost, but the Rams were unable to find a route to a second goal of the game. Gabe Ebersole had two saves as goalie.
The Rams ended the season with an 11-3 record and will say farewell to graduating seniors Gabe Ebersole, Jack Hansen, Nathan Behne, Cody Allen, Gesser Gutierres, Landon Carstens, Manuel Flores, Kolby Angell, Zeke Binkley and Brynley Ruzicka.
Across all teams in the state, Gesser Gutierres sat at second for goals scored this season with 49, just one behind first place Underwood player Kaden Ogle with 50. Nathan Behne landed third in assists across the state with 29.
Humboldt advanced to face Perry in the state qualifying game. Perry took the match 4-1, advancing to class 2A state. Perry plays number three seeded Decorah in Des Moines on May 29. The winner advances to see the winner of the Glenwood versus Assumption game on May 31.
