The American Legion and the Department of Defense request “This Memorial Day Americans pause to remember the brave men and women who have given their lives in defense of our nation, from the Revolutionary War to the worldwide war on terrorism.”
Scranton Township Cemetery, 9:45 am – Memorial Day Services will be held on Monday at 9:45 am at the Scranton Township Cemetery. Al and Cheryl Robson have headed up the committee in planning the event. Guests will be welcomed, followed by a prayer given by Tim Robbins. Carly Coffin and sons Jackson and Maverick, with Boy Scout Troop 1140 and Cub Scout Pack 114 from Glidden, are in charge of raising the flag. Jackson will then lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Olivia Hoyt, Hailey Carman and Lucy Vander Linden will sing The National Anthem.
David Burkett, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, is the guest speaker. Veterans in attendance will be recognized. The Greene County High School Band will conclude the program with patriotic music followed by Taps. The roll call of names of those buried in Scranton Cemetery since Memorial Day 2023 will be read as a final tribute.
For guaranteed, comfortable seating, bring your own lawn chairs. In case of bad weather, the service will be held in the Scranton Community Center (gymnasium, use the east door).
St. Joseph Cemetery, 9:30 am – Blessing of graves.
Jefferson Municipal Cemetery, 10:45 am – Vice commander Jim Andrew, American Legion Post #11, will serve as master of ceremonies. Pastor Angelo Luis of Christ Lutheran Church will present the invocation and benediction. The Jefferson fire department will raise the American flag and the Lindsay Medal of Honor flag, followed by a performance of the National Anthem and patriotic music by the Greene County High School Band. Brynlee Winkelman, winner of the fifth grade flag essay contest, will recite her winning entry. Army veteran Alexis Stevens will give the Memorial Day address. A joint VFW / American Legion firing squad will salute fallen heroes while Taps is played by Karlee Fagerlind and Garrett Baugh.
NOTE: The Avenues of Flags will not be in place for the Memorial Day weekend due to predicted high winds and rain.
Churdan, St Patrick historic church, 8 am – Mass, followed by military service at St Patrick Cemetery
Churdan, Highland Township Cemetery, 9:30 am – Military service with music provided by the Town and Country Band.
Coffee and rolls will be served at the Churdan American Legion Hall 8 am – noon, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary.
Rippey – The Kinkead-Martin American Legion Post #583 will conduct their salute at the Fairview United Methodist Church for their 9 am services and perform their ceremony at the cemetery afterwards.
They will be at the Angus Cemetery at 10 am, Old Rippey Cemetery at 10:30 am, and conclude the morning at Rippey Cemetery with services at 11 am.
There will be a meal following the Memorial Day services at the Rippey United Methodist Church.
Richland Township Cemetery, St Mary’s Cemetery and Franklin Township Cemetery – The Jamaica American Legion Paul Johnson Post 687 will conduct services at Richland Cemetery at 9 am, St Mary’s Cemetery north of Jamaica at 10 am, followed by Franklin Township Cemetery at Cooper at 11 am. There will be recognition of the Peer family veterans at the Cooper cemetery.
Dillavou Cemetery, 2 pm – The annual Memorial Day service at the Dillavou Cemetery north of Ralston will be held Monday at 2 pm. The guest speaker is Retired Major USM Dough Cunningham of Glidden.
Bring your lawn chairs. In case of rain or high winds, the service will be held at the Ralston fire department building.
Pleasant Hill Memorial on Sunday, May 26, 4 pm – The Kinkead-Martin American Legion Post #583 will conduct their salute at the Pleasant Hill Church service on Sunday
