Muir Family Farms wins awards in Maine-Anjou show
The Iowa State Fair finished last week, with area participants earning awards in various competitions.
Bob’s Red Mill Yeast Breads Competition was judged Aug. 11, with each entrant being required to use Bob’s Red Mill flour in the bread creation, with judges looking for the best flavor, texture and appearance. Marianne Carlson of Jefferson saw four first place finishes among her eight places. She took first in Caraway Rye, Mixed Grain, Raisin-Oatmeal and White categories; second in Dill Batter, Oatmeal and Yeast Bread Other Than Named; and third in Potato.
Carlson also competed in the Authentic European Bohemian-Style Kolaches competition, where she took second place. The entries, which were Slovak and Czech sweet pastries that hold a portion of fruit, cheese or poppy seed surrounded by puffy sweet dough, were judged on texture, flavor, appearance and creativity.
On the same day was the Bud Elwell’s Old Fashioned Fudge Competition was judged Aug. 12. Marianne Carlson took second place, claiming a prize of $100. Contestants for the competition were tasked to create an award-worthy fudge without marshmallows, marshmallow crème or peanut butter. Entries were judged on taste and texture.
Monday, Aug. 14, brought the Gaga’s Red Cake Competition, where Carlson took third place and $100, with entries judged on taste, texture and creativity. Carlson placed second, winning $250 in the Love of Cookies Competition, with the challenge being to create a plate of eight cookies containing chocolate or peanut butter or both as ingredients, with judges looking at taste, texture and appearance.
In the Pies from the Heartland Competition, Carlson continued her success, taking first place overall in the Fruit Pie Division, winning $200. She also took first in the Lattice Top Cherry and third in Fruit Pies – Strawberry-Rhubarb.
