Following are excerpts of daily activities reported by the Jefferson police department:
Thursday, Aug. 31: At 4:41 pm officers investigated an accident involving a Greene County school bus at the intersection of E. Lincoln Way and Locust St. No students were on the bus at the time of the collision. Bus driver Mavis Sawhill was eastbound on Lincoln Way when the middle of the passenger side of the bus was struck by a southbound 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee owned and operated by Sarah Dawn Schwery of Jefferson. Schwery had not stopped at the posted stop sign. The officer believes she was travelling above the speed limit during the event. Both drivers were transported by GC Ambulance to Greene County Medical Center to be evaluated for possible injuries. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Sarah Schwery, 46, of Jefferson for operating while intoxicated*. She was also cited for open container/driver and fail to obey stop sign. Damage to the bus was estimated to exceed value, according to court documents. No estimate damage to Schwery’s vehicle was provided.
Wednesday, Aug. 30: At 9:10 am officers arrested Cody Michael Husar on an outstanding arrest warrant for probation violation*. At 2:37 pm officers investigated a collision at N. Vine and W. State Sts. Cheryl Ferguson of Jefferson was westbound on State St driving a 2017 Buick Enclave owned by Donald Ferguson. She left the posted stop sign and struck on northbound 2010 Ford Focus driven by Carol Schultz of Jefferson and owned by Jerry Schultz. Ferguson was cited for failure to obey stop sign. Damage to her vehicle was estimated at $500. Damage to Schultz’s vehicle was estimated at $5,000. At 7:23 pm a complainant reported a stray dog in the 700 block of Pinet Place. The officer placed the dog in impound.
Tuesday, Aug. 29: At 12:40 am a Jefferson officer was requested to assist a Greene County deputy in finding a person who was reported missing and suspected to be in Jefferson. The officer located the person and informed the deputy of their location. At 11:28 am an employee at Regency Park reported a suspected theft. The officer is investigating. At 2:11 pm a HyVee manager reported a theft having occurred at the store. The officer is investigating. At 3:35 pm an officer performed a traffic stop near Rushview Dr and S. Locust St. As a result of the stop, the driver was cited for failure to carry registration card and operating non-registered vehicle. During the officer’s investigation a green plant material was located in the vehicle. The suspected illegal item was siezed and further charges are pending.
Monday, Aug. 28: At 10:12 am a complainant reported a check forgery had occurred with her checking account. The officer is investigating. At 11:30 am an officer located a homeless male camping beside the railroad tracks on W. McKinley St. The officer advised the subject he was trespassing and sent him on his way. At 6:58 pm an officer transported a suicidal subject to ER for medical evaluation.
Sunday, Aug. 28: At 4:25 pm an officer was called to a residence in the 300 block of N. Chestnut St for a mental health issue. The officer arrived and mediated with the subject and EMS was called to transport them to ER for an evaluation.
Saturday, Aug. 26: At 7:57 am a caller advised that subjects had moved public works traffic cones to their driveway to hold garage sale signs. The officer spoke to the subjects, who placed the cones back where they came from. At 11:04 am Amanda Chapman reported she had struck a mailbox near S. Elm and Grauer Sts while sneezing. The mailbox and car both received minor damages. Chapman was cited for fail to maintain control. At 8:03 pm a resident requested an officer at a residence in the 300 block of W. Reed St so she could surrender her two dogs to PAWS. The officer advised the resident she would need to speak to PAWS workers to complete the surrender, if they agreed.
Friday, Aug. 25: At 4:10 pm an officer began an investigation after a vehicle struck a stop sign at Hwy 30 and Elm St. The officer had identified the vehicle and is working to speak to the owner. The DOT was advised and replaced the sign. At 9:57 pm a complainant found a stray dog south of Jefferson. She met an officer at the animal shelter and the officer impounded the dog.
Thursday, Aug. 24: At 8:32 am a complainant reported a stray dog in the 300 block of S. Oak St. A short time later the dog was caught and the officer placed it in impound.
Wednesday, Aug. 23: At 4:14 pm an officer began an investigation into threats being made to a juvenile in the 400 block of E. State St. At 4:55 pm a complainant reported items missing/lost from his wallet at Regency Park. The officer is investigating. At 6:02 pm a complainant reported a stray dog in her yard in the 300 block of S. Oak St. The officer was unable to catch the animal, as it would run from the officer. At 7:13 pm an officer assisted Greene County Ambulance and the medical examiner with an unattended death in the 700 block of N. Cedar St.
Monday, Aug. 21: At 7:48 am a complainant reported a possible violation of a no contact order. The officer is investigating. At 4:10 pm an officer investigated a backing accident in the HyVee parking lot. Amanda Chapman of Jefferson advised a driver backed into her parked 2018 Volkswagen Atlas and then drove away. She provided the officer with the registration number of the other vehicle involved. The officer located the vehicle, a 1997 Ford F150, owned and operated by Richard Smith of Jefferson. The vehicles had corresponding damages from the accident. Damage to Chapman’s vehicle was estimated at $250. Damage to Smith’s vehicle was estimated at $100. At 7:20 pm a complainant reported catching a stray cat at a residence in the 400 block of S. Vine St. The animal placed the cat in the animal shelter.
Sunday, Aug. 21: At 10:02 pm security staff at Wild Rose casino reported an intoxicated female driving away from the casino. The officer located the driver and performed a traffic stop near Hwy 30 and Mulberry St. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Teresa Ann Bebb, 58, of Perry for operating while intoxicated*. She was also cited for fail to carry registration card and fail to provide proof of financial liability.
Saturday, Aug. 19: At 8:24 am a complainant reported an injured cat in his yard in the 700 block of S. Oak St. The officer determined the cat was severely injured and transported it to the Vet Clinic to be euthanized. At 12:40 pm a mother advised a 21-year-old homeless male had befriended her juvenile son. She did not this this was appropriate, due to the age difference. She advised the subject is hanging around Russell Park. The officer has not yet located the subject. At 8:52 pm a complainant advised a male subject was attempting to remove items from her basement at a residence in the 300 block of E. Madison St. The subject had fled on foot. Nothing was reported missing in the incident. The officer is investigating.
Friday, Aug. 18: At 12:39 pm a complainant reported a dog had bitten her child at Russell Park. A few minutes later a subject at a residence in the 500 block of S. Wilson Ave advised the dog had approached her in a vicious manner, then ran to the north. The officer located the animal and its owner at a residence in the 200 block of W. Madison St. The animal is current on rabies vaccinations. City ordinance advises that the animal is deemed “Illegal” after biting a human. The dog was impounded for a 10-day quarantine period, per state law. After the quarantine the animal must leave the city.

Wednesday, Aug. 16: At 10:30 am management at HyVee reported a shortchange artist managed to leave the store with $150 in cash on 8/12. This is the same suspect from Fareway. The officer is investigating. At 7:01 pm a resident captured a stray dog in the 200 block of W. Harrison St. The officer impounded the dog.
Tuesday, Aug. 15: At 12:20 pm staff at Wild Rose casino reported a patron had caught a stray dog there. The officer impounded the dog.
Monday, Aug. 14: At 7:44 am management at Fareway reported a short charge artist was in the store and walked out with $160. The officer is investigating. At 7:22 pm a complainant reported damage to a fence in the 600 block of W. State St. It appeared a vehicle had struck the fence, causing damage. The officer has no suspects in the matter.

Saturday, Aug. 12: At 4:03 pm dispatch advised of an open 911 call from a residence in the 400 block of N. Grimmell Rd. The dispatcher could hear a male making threats to harm someone in the call. The officer arrived and met with a female and her adult son. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Coleman Keith Marlow, 41 of Jefferson for harassment- first degree (aggravated misdemeanor)*.
Friday, Aug. 11: At 8:35 pm an officer performed a traffic stop on a driver of a vehicle without its headlights on in the 200 Block of Gallup Rd. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Cody Michael Husar, 20, of Churdan for carrying weapons (aggravated misdemeanor), driving while license suspended (simple), and possession of alcohol under age (simple)*. He was also cited for a registration violation and failure to provide proof of financial liability.
Thursday, Aug. 10: At 3:44 pm an officer was requested at a residence in the 900 block of W. Harrison St for a reported assault. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Jason William Sheldahl, 51, of Jefferson for disorderly conduct and assault-simple*. At 11:51 pm an officer began an investigation of a hit-and-run accident that occurred at the Greene County HS parking lot. A 2004 Honda Pilot owned by Lacy Cullum of Churdan was struck while parked in the lot.
Wednesday, Aug. 9: At 6:12 am officers assisted the GC Ambulance with an drug overdose in the 500 block of S. Chestnut St. During the call, officers noticed drug related items in plain view in the residence. The officers secured a search warrant for the residence. The officers were assisted by deputies in executing the warrant. Suspected fentanyl, marijuana, and paraphernalia items were seized for testing. Charges are pending lab results. At 4:12 pm a complainant reported the theft of tools from a shed in the 900 block of W. Lincoln Way. No forced entry to the shed was located by the officer. The incident remains under investigation.
Tuesday, Aug. 8: At 4:21 am Kyle Rysavy requested an officer at a residence in the 700 block of W. Harrison St to removed unwanted subjects from the residence. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Kyle Dean Rysavy, 24, of Jefferson for domestic abuse assault impeding air flow (Class D felony)*. At 7:36 am officers assisted the sheriff’s office in executing a search warrant at 300 E. State St, Jefferson. At 9:40 am a complainant reported a possible attempted burglary at a residence in the 500 block of N. Olive St. There was a boot mark on the door where it had been kicked overnight. No entry had been made. The officer is investigating. At 12:25 pm a subject provided an officer with a cat to be taken to the animal shelter. The officer placed the cat in impound at the shelter. At 9:08 pm a resident reported a possible suicidal subject in Jefferson. The officer contacted the subject and transported them to ER for a medical evaluation.
Monday, Aug. 7: At 11:11 am staff at Super 8 Motel reported a female wandering around outside the motel. The officer knew a subject had been looking for the female to transport her to Carroll to an appointment. The subject was taken to Carroll by the Ride Share driver. At 11:32 am an officer met a subject at the animal shelter for a dog the subject had found near Cooper. The officer placed the dog in impound. At 10:31 pm security staff at Wild Rose Casino advised of a banned subject there. The officer cited Barry Protaskey of Nebraska for trespass (simple)*.
Sunday, Aug. 6: At 2:13 pm staff at Sparky’s reported a female sitting in a vehicle there for hours. The officer met with the female driver and spoke to her. The officer believed the subject was under the influence of a narcotic and asked permission to search the vehicle. During the consent search, the officer located drug paraphernalia and seized it. The subject was complaining of health issues, so the officer transported her to ER. Charges are pending in the matter. At 4:43 pm staff at the ER requested an officer to pick up possible narcotics found at the facility. The officer took control of a small baggy of methamphetamine for destruction.
Saturday, Aug. 5: At 10:15 am a subject advised a juvenile male had been choked by a parent in Jefferson. The officer gathered information and began an Investigation. At 10:21 am staff at Greene County Medical Center ER advised of a dog bite victim at the facility. The officer met with the subject who advised he was riding his bike near W. Adams and N. Pinet Sts when he was bitten. The animal was near the road and approached him on his bike and bit his thigh. The officer met with the owners of the animal. The dog was current on rabies vaccinations. The officer advised the owner that according to animal ordinances, the dog is now illegal and must leave the city. The owner was making arrangements to move the animal out of Jefferson. At 10:28 am staff at Hy-Vee reported the unauthorized use of a credit card at the store. The officer is investigating.
Friday, Aug. 4: At 1:50 am an officer was requested at a residence in the 300 block of E. Harrison St for a domestic abuse assault. The officer arrived and spoke to a female and her husband, who was intoxicated. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Anthony Nunez, 55, of Jefferson for domestic abuse assault/displaying a dangerous weapon (aggravated misdemeanor)*. At 12:16 pm a complainant reported an injured turkey vulture in the 600 block of N. Olive St. The officer did not locate the reported bird. At 12:42 pm an officer located thick smoke in the 300 block of N. Cedar St. He spoke to a subject standing beside a burn barrel. The subject advised he was burning wood scraps and cardboard. The officer advised the subject per city ordinance, only yard waste can be burned in town. The subject advised he would stop burning the other items. At 2:15 pm a complainant reported a large bird trying to attack his dog in the 500 block of N. Grimmell Rd.The officer approached the crow, which flew away. At 6:32 pm a complainant reported a turkey vulture on his porch in the 500 block of E. Garfield St. He had run the bird off, but it kept returning. The officer contacted a DNR officer, who advised if the bird persisted there, to call back and he could attempt to relocate the bird.
Thursday, Aug. 3: At 6:53 am a complainant reported debris on the side of the RR tracks between Wilson Ave and Cedar St. The officer removed items from the area, which appeared to have fallen off of a train. Union Pacific was notified.
Wednesday, Aug. 2: At 1:48 pm management at Fareway reported two female shoplifters had stolen $200 in baby formula from the store. The officer is investigating. At 7:25 pm an officer attempted to stop the driver of a vehicle with dark windows near Hwy 30 and N. Grimmell Rd. The driver refused to pull over and continued southbound on Grimmell. The driver eventually stopped in the 900 block of W. Mahlon St. The officer arrested Ryan James Brown, 51, of Jefferson for driving while license barred and eluding (serious misdemeanors) and interference with official acts (simple misdemeanor)*. Brown was also arrested on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear*. He was cited for fail to yield to an emergency vehicle.
Tuesday, Aug. 1: At 2:47 pm a complainant requested a welfare check on her young daughter, who was staying with a grandparent in Jefferson. The child had advised her mother she had been left alone at the residence for several minutes. The officer reported the incident to DHS. At 4 pm a complainant reported a 2000 Harley Davidson motorcycle had been stolen from a residence in the 300 block of N. Cedar St. The officer entered the vehicle into NCIC as stolen. The officer is investigating. At 7:04 pm an officer arrested Eric Joshua Ireland, 44, of Jefferson on an outstanding arrest warrant for domestic abuse assault- serious*.
