Grand Junction man found guilty of attempted murder

In Greene County district court Adam Eugene Coy, 31, of Grand Junction was found guilty at a jury trial of attempted murder, willful injury resulting in serious injury, and domestic abuse assault causing bodily injury.

Coy was accused of shooting his domestic partner in the back of the head in their Grand Junction home Feb. 4.

According to a brief filed by Greene County attorney Thomas Laehn, the victim called 911 and reported she had fallen and hit her head and needed an ambulance.

When Greene County deputy Heath Enns arrived at the scene, he determined within one minute that the victim had suffered a gunshot wound to her head. He at first believed it to be self-inflicted.

The victim was taken by ambulance to Greene County Medical Center. The physician who attended her there said he did not believe the wound could have been self-inflicted.

A neighbor told sheriff’s deputies he had heard gunshots at about 8:15 pm. The victim called 911 at 9:52.

Coy was detained and taken to the Greene County LEC. Coy said the victim had retrieved a revolver from behind her pillow, had pointed it at the left side of her head, and had shot herself behind the ear.

Coy was charged the next day with attempted murder, domestic abuse assault with intent to inflict serious injury, and willful injury causing serious injury.

A jury was selected July 18 and the trial started the next day. The jury came to its verdicts July 24.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Sept. 8.

Laehn and assistant county attorney Laura Snider prosecuted the case. Coy was represented by court appointed attorney Joel Baxter. The Honorable Kurt J. Stoebe presided at the trial.
