The West Marshall Trojans played at Greene County Friday and returned home to State Center with a pair of wins.
A close game ended in a loss for the Greene County boys basketball team, falling 66-64.
The game was close throughout. The Trojans held a one point lead in the first quarter and at half time, 37-36. The teams played evenly in the third quarter. WM prevailed in the end.
Leading the Rams for the game was Richard Daugherty, scoring 22 points with eight rebounds, three steals and eight assists. Jesse Miller added 14 points to the board with seven rebounds and one steal. Gabe Ebersole was responsible for 13 points, four rebounds and two steals. Patrick Daugherty had three assists and Brynley Ruzicka had two.
The Rams made 52.4 percent of their field goals and 50 percent of their 3-point shots. They grabbed 22 rebounds, turned the ball over 15 times, and committed 20 fouls.
The Rams were scheduled to play again on Tuesday at Perry high school and on Friday at home against Nevada.
The Rams are third in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference as of Jan. 30. Standings are Roland-Story 11-0; Nevada 8-3; Greene County 6-5; South Hamilton 5-6; West Marshall 5-6; PCM 4-7; Saydel 3-8; Perry 2-9.
The Greene County girls team is still looking for their first victory of the season.
West Marshall is ranked No. 5 in the state and they proved their ranking against the Rams. The Trojans went up 26-3 in the first quarter and never looked back. Greene County failed to score a point in the third quarter. The final score was 79-17.
Esther Van Horn was the high scorer for the Rams, putting up five points. Emma Hoyle scored four, with eight rebounds and three assists. Alexa Peters added three points to the board, with Kamryn Sanders rebounding the ball six times and Emma Shipley at three rebounds.
The team has improved in ball handling, turning the ball over just 16 times. They’re also improving in rebounding, getting 27 rebounds off the boards. They committed just three fouls. They made six of 44 four field goal shots and three of 16 three-point shots. They were two for four at the line.
West Marshall leads the HOIAC with a 10-1 record. Other records are Roland-Story 9-2, South Hamilton 9-2, Nevada 6-5, PCM 6-5, Perry 2-9, Saydel 2-9, Greene County 0-11
