Ram volleyball team opens season with three wins

Record now at 5-2

The Greene County volleyball team is 5-2 on the season as of Aug. 30, having started the season with a three-match winning streak last week, losing two at a triangular at home Monday, and winning both matches at a triangular in Panora Tuesday.

The girls opened their season Aug. 23 with a triangular at Collins-Maxwell High School. The first match of the night was a 2-0 win for the Rams against the home team. The first set went to the Rams 25-11, with the second ending 25-6, also in favor of the Rams. 

Against the host Spartans, Senior Natalie Heupel had 15 assists, three digs and three aces serving. Junior Kaylee Stalder had 3.5 kills and senior Isabella Schroeder had three blocks.

In the second match in the triangular, the Rams faced the Glidden-Ralston Wildcats, winning both sets, the first 25-19 and the second 25-16. 

Natalie Heupel had 15 assists, Schroeder had four kills and two blocks, and Katrina Heuple had three digs.

The Rams traveled to St. Edmond Catholic School in Fort Dodge to face the Gaels on Aug. 25. After winning all three sets, Greene County took home another win. The first set went 25-15, the second 25-21 and the third 25-18.  

Sophomores saw playing time against the Gaels. Violet Reedy led the team in assists with 22 while classmate Payton Kokenge had one block. Senior Alexa Peters had seven digs while Schroeder had four kills. Katrina Heupel had 2.3 aces at the service line.

The Rams’ winning streak ended when they hosted Boone and Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) Monday, Aug. 29.

The Toreadors won the first set 25-19, but the Rams came back to take the second set 25-10. Boone came back in the third with a 15-9 score to take the match 2-1.

Senior Natalie Heupel led the team in assists with 14 and in digs with 10. Senior Katrina Heupel had one ace. Junior Kaylee Stalder led in kills with 2.3. Sophomore Emma Ewalt was credited with three blocks.

Against the Kuemper Knights, the Rams lost the first set 22-25, again won the second set 25-18, but dropped the third set 6-15.

Natalie Heupel had 19 assists. Senior Isabella Schroeder had 3.3 kills and led the team in blocks with two. Katrina Heupel had eight digs. At the serving line Kaylee Stalder had one ace.

The Rams traveled to Panora for a triangular with South Central Calhoun and Panorama Tuesday, Aug. 30. The Rams topped the SoCal Titans 2-0 with set scores of 25-23 and 30-28.

The Rams won the first match against the So Cal Titans in two close sets, with scores of 25-23 and 30-28. The Rams also topped the Panorama Panthers in two sets, 25-12 and 25-19. Stats were not available as of Tuesday night.
