The two youths who were seriously burned in a cabin fire north of Scranton early New Year’s Day are continuing treatment at the University of Iowa Burn Center.
Lucas Oakes was released over the weekend and will continue to recuperate at home. A “welcome home rally” honoring him was held Sunday afternoon in the parking lot of the Greene County High School in Jefferson.
Harley McDonald, who suffered burns on 90 percent of his body, is undergoing extensive treatment in Iowa City. He has undergone numerous surgeries with more planned in the future. The burns must be debrided before skin can be grafted to begin the healing.
Due to the risk of infection, the only visitors allowed are his parents, Nina and Marty McDonald of Scranton. Nina has been updating his health condition for friends and relatives on a Caring Bridge website.
Friends who want to assist both families with expenses can contribute to accounts set up at Peoples Bank. There is also a Venmo account for McDonalds: Angelina McDon ald@harleyde314. Fundraising events are planned. ~ courtesy of The Scranton Journal
