Winners told in American Legion fifth grade essay contest

The American Legion annually conducts an essay for fifth graders on the topic “What the Flag Means to Me.”

The purpose of the essay contest is for students to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation for the United States flag and gain knowledge of flag etiquette and respect for the flag. It also allows students to practice their writing skills.

A panel of judges selected winning essays, with Ava Hinote first, Lucas Daniel second, and Alaina Gettler, third. Ava will be invited to read her essay at the Memorial Day program at the Jefferson Municipal Cemetery May 30.

American Legion Post 11 commander Kenny Arbuckle visited Greene County Middle School recently to announce winners and present certificates.

The American Legion thanks fifth grade social studies teacher Kim Braun for her work in providing students information and overseeing them as they prepare their essays.
