Sheriff’s report – January 2022

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office

Monday, Jan. 31: At 6:45 pm a deputy investigated a violation of no contact order in the 1400 block of Highway 144 near Grand Junction.

Saturday, Jan. 29: At 3:50 pm the sheriff and deputies, Iowa State Patrol, DCI, and the Boone County sheriff’s office arrested Jorge Palacios, 39, of California, and Richard Harris, 52, of Marshalltown for theft- first degree, theft- second degree, and criminal mischief- first degree*. Steven Curvin, 42, of Story City was also arrested for accessory after the fact and was charged in Story County.  At 2:17 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in the 400 block of Percival St in Rippey.

Friday, Jan. 28: At 2:18 am a deputy investigated a runaway from Rippey. The runaway was located in Madison County. At 9:41 am a deputy investigated a scam in the 2000 block of 260th St in Junction Township. At 11 am the sheriff’s office was notified of a ATM stolen from the Wild Rose Casino.

Thursday, Jan. 27: At 2:09 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 1800 block of Redwood Ave in Grant Township.

Tuesday, Jan. 25: At 3:34 am a deputy found railroad crossing arms that were malfunctioning on Anyer St in Dana. At 11:03 am a deputy arrested Carlos Sierra Rojas, 25, homeless, for an arrest warrant for violating pretrial release*.

Monday, Jan. 24: At 11:09 am a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on Orchard Ave near Highway 30 east of Jefferson.

Sunday, Jan. 23: At 1:32 am a deputy conducted a traffic stop on Highway 30 near J Ave. George Gonzalez, 42, of Perry was arrested for identity theft* after providing false information; he was also cited for driving while license suspended.

Saturday, Jan. 22: At 7:52 am a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on Quaker Ave near 280th in Franklin Township. At 9:10 am a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 300 block of Irving St in Scranton. At 3:56 pm a deputy, Jefferson fire, Scranton fire, Grand Junction fire, and Paton fire responded to a garage fire at 1820 250th St in Grant Township. Some livestock were lost in the fire and the garage was a total loss. The cause of the fire is undetermined.

Friday, Jan. 21: At 2:18 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 1000 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 10:03 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 300 block of Irving St in Scranton.

Thursday, Jan. 20: At 6:25 am the sheriff investigated a complaint of smoke near J Avenue and County Road E-53 west of Jefferson. A train engine was found to be having mechanical issues. At 12:20 pm a deputy investigated a dog bite in the 200 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 1:18 pm a deputy investigated a report of a stop sign missing on Highway 30 and W Ave east of Grand Junction. At 2:33 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 800 block of W Ave in Junction Township. At 3:59 pm a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on 257th Street and Meadow Ave in Grant Township.

Wednesday, Jan. 19: Routine activity reported.

Tuesday, Jan. 18: At 12:40 am a deputy responded to Highway 144 and 110th St in Paton Township for a report of a car-deer accident. When the deputy arrived at the location there was no vehicle or driver there. At 3:01 pm a deputy investigated a snowmobile complaint in the 600 block of W. Paton St in Paton. At 3:13 pm a deputy conducted a consent search of a residence in the 600 block of Locust St in Scranton. At 4:04 pm a deputy investigated a complaint by the owner of an iPhone alerting him there was an airtag tracking them in the 700 block of State St in Scranton. At 5:32 pm a deputy assisted the JPD with the arrest of Jody Schad, 46, of Jefferson on a warrant for failure to appear*. At 10:24 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of a iPhone alerting that an airtag was tracking the subject in the 2000 block of Neola Ave. The vehicle was searched and nothing was located.

Monday, Jan. 17: At 1:15 pm a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on 170th St near X Ave east of Dana. At 2:51 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a consent search in the 100 block of N. Grimmell Rd.

Sunday, Jan. 16: At 1:19 am a deputy investigated a complaint of a group of minors pulling sleds behind vehicles in the 100 block of Ram Dr in Jefferson. At 8:34 am a deputy and Paton Fire responded to a small that fire that was found to be controlled in the 500 block of W. Paton St in Paton.

Saturday, Jan. 15: At 2:36 am a deputy assisted a motorist who was stuck in the snow on 19th and Railroad St in Grand Junction. At 2:59 am a deputy assisted a motorist who went into the ditch on Highway 30 and R Ave east of Jefferson. At 3:59 am a deputy assisted another motorist who went into the ditch at the same location.

Friday, Jan. 14: At 2:59 pm a deputy assisted a motorist who went into the ditch on 140th Street and G Ave west of Churdan. At 5:08 pm a deputy assisted a motorist that went into the ditch in the 500 block of Highway 30 west of Scranton. At 5:31 pm deputies, Jefferson fire, Greene County Ambulance, and Grand Junction rescue assisted the Jefferson PD with a two-vehicle accident on Highway 30 near Orchard Ave east of Jefferson. At 7:14 pm the sheriff investigated a complaint of gun shots in the 600 block of S. 15th St in Grand Junction.

Thursday, Jan. 13: At 10:24 am a deputy investigated a complaint of a vicious dog in the 300 block of State St in Scranton. At 4:25 pm a deputy arrested Nicholas Charlson, 33, of Des Moines on warrants for criminal mischief- fifth degree and theft- fifth degree*.  At 8:05 pm a deputy arrested Rodney Sheffield, 35, of Des Moines for a warrant for failure to appear*.

Wednesday, Jan. 12: At 12:50 pm a deputy investigated a two-vehicle accident on Highway 30 at W Ave east of Grand Junction. Holly Thompson, 66, of Ogden was eastbound driving a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee when she was rear ended by Micah Bardell, 20, of Marengo, who was driving a 2019 Nissan Kicks. One driver was transported by Greene County Ambulance to Boone County Hospital. Damage to Thompson’s vehicle was estimated at $5,000. Damage to Bardell’s vehicle was estimated at $15,000. Bardell was cited for failure to stop in assured clear distance and driving while license suspended. At 2:20 pm a deputy arrested Michael Eastman, 48, of Jefferson on a warrant for violation of probation*.

Tuesday, Jan. 11: At 11:17 am a deputy investigated a complaint of illegal hunting in the 300 block of 125th St in Cedar Township. At 11:54 am a deputy and Jefferson fire responded to a hay grinder fire in the 1600 block of 255th St in Grant Township. A bail of hay caught fire and was extinguished. At 2:47 pm a deputy arrested James Eberle, 28, of Dana on an arrest warrant for failure to appear*.

Monday, Jan. 10: At 3:38 pm a deputy assisted the Dallas County sheriff’s office with locating the owner in Grand Junction of a car found in Dallas County.

Sunday, Jan. 9: Routine activity reported.

Saturday, Jan. 8: At 5:03 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 200 block of W. Anyer St in Dana.

Friday, Jan. 7: At 5:46 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 144 near 200th St north of Grand Junction. Kayla Mckown, 27, of Jefferson struck a deer with a 2010 Chrysler Sebring, causing an estimated $15,000 in damage to the vehicle. At 5:46 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on 235th St near Parkland Ave east of Jefferson. Cara Reedy, 43, of Scranton struck a deer with a 2013 Chevrolet Suburban, causing an estimated $8,000 in damage to the vehicle. At 8:21 pm a deputy assisted an Iowa State trooper with an arrest of Francisco Mora, 29, of Perry for a California warrant for contempt of court.

Thursday, Jan. 6: At 10:08 am a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in the 700 block of School St in Churdan. At 9:34 pm a deputy assisted the Algona police department with identifying a suspect.

Wednesday, Jan. 5: Routine activity reported.

Tuesday, Jan. 4: At 2:40 pm a deputy investigated a missing person report that had to be reported in Pennsylvania.

Monday, Jan. 3: At 12:54 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an arrest. At 3:13 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in the 600 block of State St in Scranton.

Sunday, Jan 2: At 8:21 am a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on 190th St near L Ave in Hardin Township. At 10:36 pm a deputy investigated a violation of a no contact order in the 1400 block of Highway 144 in Grand Junction.

Saturday, Jan. 1: At 3:37 am the sheriff and deputy were notified that there were two burn victims at St Anthony Hospital in Carroll from a structure fire in Greene County. The cabin was located in the 1100 block of H Ave in Bristol Township. The cabin was a total loss and was completely consumed by the fire. Two juveniles were injured in the fire and transported from Carroll to Iowa City. One juvenile had serious injuries and the other juvenile was in critical condition. The cause of the fire is suspected to be a wood stove. Scranton fire responded to the scene to make sure that there were no other injuries or victims. The cabin was completely consumed by fire and was a total loss. At 8:39 am the sheriff, Jefferson fire, and Greene County Ambulance responded to a residence in the 1300 block of 170th St in Hardin Township for people passing out in the residence. The family was transported by personal vehicle to Greene County Medical Center. There were high levels of CO2 in the residence. At 6:39 pm a deputy assisted with cattle out on I Ave near 240th St in Jackson Township.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged, this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
